What a week!!! What a Neuro!!!

Hi everyone, I hope that you are all feeling OK.  I promised to keep you updated about what went on with my IV.  Well to cut a VERY long story short it has send me into a rebound so now I can't walk or hardly see, and it brought out latent diabetes - great!  I had 500 per day for 5 days and I feel terrible.  I asked the Neuro how long the steroids would stay in my system for and you would not believe what he said "who knows - lets ask the sun and moon and the stars"  - I was speechless.  My normal Doc came around because I can't drive anymore and he said oh you got pre-diabetes here's a kit to test yourself - ciao and off he went.  I have no clue what to do about this but ask my friends on here about the steroids and diabetes.  I been googling around but can't seem to find any answers about how long the drug stays in your system, and how often you test yourself with this silly pin prickler thing.

Feeling totally stressed, ectopic heartbeats are back - and this is just after I was starting to feel better after being with my therapist when I THOUGHT I was at my lowest, but it seems yoo can go even lower, but I have positive thooughts in my head and I will not let this get to me I promsise you all that.  I got Wifi so I am typing this from my bed - all I can think of is what the neruo said "sn moom and stars"

You are all so good to me,

sending love

Sherma...I am so sorry to hear what you are going through and having to deal with total Moron's for doctor's...have they ever thought of using Google I wonder?  It seems to work well for some of us!

When I underwent Steroid treatment with Solumedrol, my Neurologist always insisted that I eat a banana every day that I was getting treatment because the steroid will deplete your level and cause the following problems:

Symptoms of Hypokalemia:
Hypokalemia ranges from very ornate to severe level. A person suffering from simple/harmless/primary staged hypokalemia may experience no symptoms at all, but general symptoms of hypokalemia are:
Fatigue
Patient may experience problems such as Myalgia and muscular weakness
Patient may experience hyponatremia and also may experience confused i.e. anxiety.
Acme problem
Skin related problems such as blistering, skin eruptions, dryness of skin etc.
Temporary memory loss or problems such as weak memory etc.
Patient is prone to heart related problems, such as heart deterioration.
Digestive system also may get affected due to potassium deficiency leading to hypertension, improper sleep, nervous system deterioration, depression, constipation etc.
In some cases patient may experience ringing/noise in ear.

I don't understand why your doc that came to see you wouldn't clue into that and I would mention it to him/her the next time you speak to them.  My neuro said that the amount of potassium contained in a banana would suffice and taking a supplement may be too much which can in turn cause a potassium overdose which apparently is not good either!

If you don't like banana's, like me, I can't stand the things, try to eat lot's of potatoes and google other sources of potassium ok?

I am pretty sure that if you increase your potassium to a higher lever you will start to feel a whole lot better.

Let me know what happens ok?

Lots of Hugs,

Rena

I don't know about the IV stuff, but I do have type 2 diabetes. I test my blood sugar every morning. (Or I'm supposed to, anyway, sometimes I forget). If the results are really high, I test again before dinner, and adjust what I eat. The prednison will raise blood sugar. Did he put you on any medication? If he didn't, checking your blood sugar won't do anything except give you sore fingers, LOL. Ask his nurse, they are usually better relating what you should do than the doctors are. That God for good nurses. They see the reality of patients much more than the lord high almighty doctors do. Good luck, let us know how you are doing........Maggie

TOTALLY, A What the f' er.......ha/ha/ha. . .I needed that.

I too, was searching how long the solumedrol, and prednisone stays in the body.  I think it's just leaving me now, and it's been over a week.

I did not know about the sugar.  Thanks for that info "T" I wonder if that contributed to my last week of problems, with water, etc. . .unreal, like you said.

I did find out something important this week, that I think is important to share.  I'm a huge water drinker, and w/the Solu and subsequent prednisone, I increases my intake big time.  Well, I woke up each day w/so much fluid in my legs and joints, was driving me crazy, as it hurts.  Finally, I read something briefly that talked about not having enough sodium and potassium in the system, so I stopped all the intake on friday.  Believe it or not, my legs went down from there on out.  Whew. . . thank god, as I was about to pop! Literally.

Anyway, wanted to share that, too much water is not good either, even if you are going potty all day long. . . thought i was doing myself some good, NOT.

be well,
SL
p.s. I lost weight on the prednisone too...... thought it was because I was ignoring those angry hungar pains

I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR ORDEAL,

SOLU-MEDROL SIDE EFFECTS ARE PRE-DIABETES SYMPTOMS,ALL 4 TIMES I HAVE BEEN ON THEM THEY HAVE SHOT MY SUGAR LEVELS THROUGH THE ROOF.AT SOME POINTS OVER 400.

MY GP HAS ME TAKE GLUCOPHAGE 1000MGS A DAY WHILE ON THE ROIDS AND FOR 2 WEEKS AFTERWARDS.

MUSCLE WEEKNESS IS ALSO A SIDE EFFECT,EVERYTHING OUR DEAR OLD DOCS DON'T INFORM US ABOUT.

FOR HOW LONG THEY STAY IN OUR SYSTEMS,I DON'T KNOW.

WHEN I FIRST DONE THE 2 ROUNDS OF SOLU-MEDROL,I SUFFERED MISERABLY,COULDN'T WALK.MY FIRST ROUND I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL,IT WAS BAD.2ND ROUND WAS AT HOME,BUT HOME HEALTH CAME IN AND SO DID A PHYSICAL THERAPIST.

I PRAY THAT YOU GET TO FEELING BETTER AND FOR THE NEURO,I'D LIKE TO KICK HIM IN THE HINEY AND SEND HIM TO THE MOON,HE'D BE SEEING STARS .

WHAT AN INCOMPATIONATE DR.

Hi Ess

No I've lost another 6lb - and thats from doing absolutely nothing but lying in bed and I have been eating a good healthy regime.

When this pases over I am going to go and see a nutritioniest (sp) to see what they have to say.  It could be the diabetes so I have read that is causing this weight loss, but I will go.

Thanks Ess for your reply,

Love,

Debs

My wife says I cried for a month afterwards.  But, really the effects only lasted about a week.  After a week everything started to go back to being more normal.

Hi. I can't help with the steroids and diabetes, but nevertheless wanted to wish you well. Have you managed to gain any weight?

Hang in there--the steroid effect can't last forever.
