What is remission?

I thought that typically MS involved remissions?  Since the birth of my DD in May I have had symptoms.  Some days they are worse than others but never fully go away.  For example since I was diagnosed with ON in November I have days when it hurts to move my eye or the vision gets blurry but it comes and goes or the pain in my calf is severe for a few days then not really noticeable, then it will get severe again.  Does this mean I have a type of MS that does not have remissions?

Here is a blog by a doctor that describes attacks and remissions (among a few other "hot topics".)  He has several pages worth of information. It is worthy of reading.

My attack(s) seemed to hit in layers and I honestly didn't feel stable (or well) for about 10 months straight. I had a mult-focal attack, slowly started feeling better then a milder attack hit then again slowly started feeling better then another. I had three attacks (varying degrees) in 9 months - October through July.

My baseline hasn't really returned to normal so days that I'm tired, feeling a little sick, getting ready to start my period or exposed to triggers (heat and physical over-load) I have a pseudo-excerbation. Somedays, there seems to be no-explanation for my increase in symptoms. Like you, I had many vision/eye issues - it has been 14 months since the visual symptoms start and like today my eye feels slightly "off." I have double vision and my eyes are no longer exactly straight (INO.)

It took me three separate distinct flares to decipher the difference between a flare and my new normal. It still isn't easy to always know for sure except my flares seem to last weeks not days and the healing seems to takes awhile. There is a good article that explains the attacks, remissions and why we have some residual symptoms/damage.

Yeah - I am in the "probable category."

I had my Neuro-Ophth give me her impression that it's early MS and my MSologist is being vague in telling me I'm stable and it may be benign or early. lol ~ I have periods of flares and remissions.

Didn't your eye personnel give you anything for the ON?
I usually get treated with prednisone drops
Please don't endure ON or iritis without consulting them

Hi Mummy,

Same here, I've had mild symptoms since late August and full blown symptoms starting end of October.  I have good days and bad, but I never feel 100%.  My symptoms come over me like waves through out the day.  I'm yet to be dx'd.

Does that mean we have PPMS or PRMS - if we never seem to really get a break from our symptoms?

Because my symptoms aren't severe I haven't had to take anything yet.  I have been seen by a Neuro-Opthomologist but they consider the ON to have resolved at this point since the symptoms aren't as severe as they were to begin with. (and they weren't ever super severe)

I've been wondering that as well.  I've been reading that it can take months for symptoms to go into remission, so I guess it's hard to say.  I guess it's up to our neuro's to decide.
