What is your vertigo like?

by deborah0904, Oct 03, 2009 08:51PM
Before being diagnosed with MS, I had a bad episode of vertigo one day.  (One of many episodes)  I went to an ENT and had all the tests and was told it was not from an inner ear issue, but, was of a neurological nature.

At night when I lay down, I will get vertigo that lasts for a few seconds and it will be gone.  I've tried to reproduce it by turning over to my other side, etc. but, it will not reproduce.  Do any of you have the same thing happen with your MS?

Also, at times, when I am standing and turn my head I will get a sense of vertigo, dizziness or something else that I don't know how to explain.  Either way, It makes me have to stop and turn my head slowly when I have to do so.

Just interested in what other MS'ers experience.
Thanks,
Deborah

Been there done that.  ENT said peripheral but central.  I also have vertigo.  Once it lasted for weeks.  The last episode was a few weeks ago.  I was sound asleep when I felt the room whirling.  My only thought was "Please God, no"

I have also experienced the "vertigo, dizziness or something else that I don't know how to explain" when turning my head but like you can't be duplicated. Sometimes I think my brain cannot keep up with my eyes.

On here you are never alone...someone...somewhere is having the same experience "0)

I, too, have all of the symptoms you experience which is probably what is causing  my neuro-otologist to doubt my MS dx as my sympoms do not fit nealy into one category.

My physical therapist noted that my left eye tracks slower that my right on some days. She also identified exactly what body position causes "that something else that is vertigo or dizziness or something else". Through her keen observations , she noted that if I turn my head to the left (my bad side) , look to the left and have my weight shifted onto my left leg and foot, I stumble and fall. I can look right and put all my weight on the left side but the "other" sensation and stumbling does not occur.

Don't know if this might apply to you. Currently this is day 14 of this last vertigo go-round. The Epley manuver done yesterday seems to have improved one portion of my vertigo triggers but others still remain.

Like terry said, on here you're never alone. I hope you find your triggers so that you can avoid them.

Maybe I've not been adequately observant, but I see no sign of triggers, per se.  My vertigo lessens and worsens, but it only goes away completely when I am asleep.  Sometimes when I wake, I'm not aware of it when I first get out of bed, but it's rarely more than a couple of steps before I feel it again.  In essence, it's been continuous for the past year.

This happens to me basically on a daily basis vs constantly.  I definitely notice it every day.  If I think about it probably worse in the am and evenings.  It is as if my eyes continue to move and flitter about, even when I am sitting still.  this is usually when I move too fast that it does this, but almost makes me lose balance.

I have had moments when I'm bending forward at the waist to pick up laundry or whatever, and if I get upright too quickly, it will feel like the floor is coming up to meet me.  It also comes with what I describe as an Alice-in-Wonderland feeling, like I am getting smaller and/or the room is getting bigger, and the walls are curving around me.  Sounds really weird I know.  It is only a momentary sensation and happens infrequently, thank goodness.  It is unsettling when it happens, and fortunately has always occurred at home and not at work, at the grocery store, etc.  I usually grab something to steady myself for the brief moment when it feels I might topple over, whichI never do.  Not sure if this is exactly vertigo, or what.

when I get hot saying walking around outside in the summer, i get vertigo.  I get the drunk walking type of vertigo (a good medical description ... haha :P))

I had it really bad for a year, and it faded a lot last fall.

But, I had an ear infection the winter prior which resulted in a popped ear drum, so I think that may account for a lot of the spins I had. (hole is now healed)
