What would you do?

I know you guys are me but I would like your opinions on what I should do. As some of you know I am in college, I went back when my doctor took me off work until we figure out what is going on. It was too hard for me to have worked for 22 years then have to stop.

Anyway when I go to school, I sometimes have to park way out in the parking lot and sometimes even in the upper parking lot and have to walk half mile to mile to school. The past couple of weeks it has been a real challenge on me to accomplish walking from the parking lot to campus, then having to walk campus to my classes. I don't know if I can keep doing this.

I have already asked my neuro for a handicap parking but he said that right now he is not comfortable doing that because they are strict on the handicap parking cards. I don't know what I am going to do, I have already taken all teh classes I can online so now I have to go to class to finish.

I guess I am asking what would you do if you were in this situation, I have thought about just quiting school, but I am not a quiter but then again, I can't keep doing all the walking. My leg from foot to buttocks and it makes it impossible to walk. Today I went to class and now I am down and out cause it hurts to bad to move.

Any ideas or opinions? I know you all have some for me :)

Thank you,
Paula

What a great doctor, NOT, don't quit school, you hold our head high and ask your primary doctor.  Sending you good vibes, and hang in there we all will make it through these bad times.

There is no reason for your neuro not to fill out the paper work for a placard. If for no other reason than to use in the summer during the heat. You do not need to be walking anyt further than nessecary in the heat!! Some neuros are just A S Ses Good luck

Keep bugging your doctor. It's not fair if you are really having that much trouble. He can always give you a temporary red card. They gave my friend one for Plantar Faciatis (spelling) and my friend got a BLUE one for his asthma! Do they have any type of shuttle at your school?

Paula, in Ohio a doctor, PA, advanced practice nurse or chiro only has to write a script that you send to the BMV along with the fee and a form that you fill out.  The form states what the qualifiers are and what must be included on the script.  Your doctor is probably already familiar with it.

You can print out the form here: http://publicsafety.ohio.gov/links/bmv4826.pdf
If you have been in the doctor's office recently she might be willing to write the script and put it in the mail to you.  Once you mail it in it will be a few weeks before you get the placquard.

In the mean time, I'd consider using some type of walking aid.  I realize nobody WANTS to resort to an aid, especially in a campus setting.  But even a cane can increase your stamina quite a bit.  I didn't realize how exhausting it was to maintain concentration with even a small balance issue (not visible to others) until I experienced walking with a cane one day.  I felt so free that I was able to disregard my embarrassment about walking assisted.

I've got to tell you, I hope to never meet this neuro. He has you quit work "until", continues to drag his feet about a diagnosis and now doesn't do whatever it takes to support your desire to remain in the workforce because of ....... what?  He's afraid of..... ah, the handicapped placquard police?  PLA-LEASE!!!  Do they revoke medical liceses for that?  I bet he has a nice reserved space to park in, btw.

You best NOT EVEN THINK about quitting school woman!  You get that blue card and hang it from your purse next time you see the neuro.

Alex,

Thank you, I will talk to my PCP tomorrow and hopefully she will agree with me and fill out the paperwork. I know that if something doesn't give I will have to quit school and I have come to far to quit now. Wish me luck.

I got mine from my PCP. I thought it would be hard she was happy to do it. She has known me for years. I do not always use it. But it sure comes in handi I guess that is why it says handicapped ARR ARR ARR as Polly would say.

Thanks guys,

I just made an appointment with my PCP for tomorrow morning, I will go that route to see what she will do if not I will call my neuro again to see what he might do for me.

Amo,
Thanks for your advice, sometimes I want to slap him in the head lol but he is usually very good about things so I will talk to him again, maybe he was just having a moment :)

Red,
Yes I am in a degree program, the college won't do anything about the parking unless I have something from my doctor, believe me I have already asked.

thanks again,

Paula

Hi Paula,

I would hate to see you quit school, there has to be a way to get around this.   Are you in a degree program?  If you have an advisor I would start there and tell him/her your situation to see if they can help.

I'm wondering if there is a different approach for your doctor.  You could ask him for a temporary permit so that you can stay in school.  He might feel better about that.

This is a tough one, I will keep thinking about it.

first...slap him up the side his head and drill a  hole in it! man, i am stunned he refused you...here you are tring trying trying.

Frist, i would not drop out.
Second, I would call your neuro again and tell him point blank what you   have   said here!
If that doesn't change his mind...

third..., do you have aa  PCP? Neuros are not the only doctors that can fill paper work for parking plackards (my family doc did) I started with temp cards, when it expierd then doc reslized it wasn't going away and eaier to issue  the permanat than doing the paper work over and over.

don't give up. i know this is a very difficult issue thatt you would gladly not have to deal with. If it will reserve thee percious energy you need to get on  with school, then that what needs happening.

good luck and lhang in there. amo

Ask your PCP.  Any doctor can recommend a HC placard.   You can also ask for your doctor Temporary Red Card.
