Who is right and who is wrong???????????

Hi everyone,

I have another question to ask regarding ms diagnosis and mri.

This frustrates me no end.

On the neurology Ask a Doctor Forum in one of the posts from the dr she says that " ms is excluded with a normal brain mri"

I have read and heard that mri does not rule ms out 100% as the slices may be too thick, the machine may not be of a high enough strength, lesions may take a while to appear.

If mri does not exclude ms, then why do neuros, and 2 have done so on the other forums, on here keep saying that they do.

Who on earth is right and who is wrong??????????????

I think it depends upon the neuro in question.  Many will discount symptoms in favor of a normal MRI to rule out MS.  Stay away from those.  If your neuro looks at you wholistically - looks at your symptoms, looks at your MRI, evaluates your 'dissemination through time' then they're a better physician, and worth the trouble to stay with them.

Melissa,
Neurology is a vast field of study, and this is exactly why we recommend that people see a neurologist who specializes in MS and understands all the nuances of diagnosing this MiSerable disease.

MRI's can be negative because the technology has not evolved to see those areas of the brain that may be involved with early development of MS.

hope that helps,
Lulu
