how much sleep does an ms patient need?

I am having issues sleeping throughout the night. Pre Ms I would fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. In addition my sleep was uninterrupted for 8 hours. Now I am up until about 1am (usually working) look at the clock throughout the night, and get out of bed by 6 am. My neuro stresses the importance of sleep and wants to prescribe a sleep aid. (Note that I am not one to take naps during the day. ) I know my body is tired and needs sleep but do not want to take any more meds. Your thoughts and feedback are greatly appreciated. Gina

I bought a box fan and slept for 10 hours last night.  I also took a 2 hour nap today.  (go figure)  I NEVER sleep during the day!  The sound is both calming and soothing.  I feel well rested today.  Gina

Sometimes with MS it is hard for the brain to cut off. My pain specialist says my brain is stuck on sometimes due to MS. There are many things to help sleep. Sleep is important to health.

Have you had a sleep study?  That should be a first step, prior to any medications.  Those with ms can have both obstructive and/or central sleep apnea, which can really mess up your sleep and  make symptoms and cognitive function worse.  See if he will refer you for that first.
