I have lost my voice from MS and have had some minor swallowing issues (coughing up my drink unless I'm slow and deliberate about it) but never experienced ain with either symptom. Whenever I've had a painful throat it's been due a cold or when I had mono when I was young (accommpanied by fever, enlarged lymph glands all over, etc). What you describe doesn't sound related to MS.

You mentioned hoping it's a virus and that your GP prescribed you antibiotics? Did they do a throat culture? Antibiotics aware useless for viral infections and if over prescribed can result in antibiotic resistance. They should only be used for bacterial infections, which is diagnosed by a throat culture.  If you have a cold virus, rest and fluids are your best friends.

You just posted that your GP gave you "antibiotics" which is usually prescribed for the typical signs and symptoms of a throat infection.....IF your lost voice and difficulty swallowing was due to MS, you wouldn't have signs of a throat infection and require antibiotics.

It's a huge anxiety leap to already be worrying or even thinging about a feeding tube.....

Hey there,

Immis is basically saying exactly what i was going to say......I thought it was a giant leap to be assuming it was a neurological issue, if your throat is painful or sore to swallow, most people would conclude it was one of the common causes first and see a GP if necessary.

I looked at your posting history, simply because I wondered if it was possible that your anxiety, might be leading you to read into things more, which isn't very good for your or anyone. I did notice there seemed to be a pattern of assuming worrying things in your posts, eg tests results disproved your last worry, misunderstandings about MS, your reluctance of and dire expectations regarding DMD's (Tecfidera) which interestingly was what you experienced etc

It's possible your anxiety since being dx with CIS is continuing to escalate and leading you to leap towards thinking up worst case outcomes and leading you astray, honestly anxious thoughts will always create a worse situation than what reality usually brings........breath!

In 'some' cases MS swallowing issues can get quite bad (grim?) sometimes, though it's typically in late stage or long term MS than what is typically experienced with CIS or the early stage of MS. My speech is effected and when my speech is really off it usually causes some minor swallowing issues, though it's more to do with the mechanics of chewing and moving solids where they need to go.

I would suggest if you are acquiring information on line that worries and isn't reassuring, that you try focusing your site choices to the MS societies and MS topic specific pdf brochures........

Cheers...........JJ

Thanks for your reply. I personally have never lost my voice. I have however had strep Also my toncils removed. Im just concerned that it could progression.  I hope for the best...thats its only a virus. I have already see my GP who gave me antibiotics.  Im on my way to see Neuro. I did read there is a test to see how the muscles of my throat are holding up. Its just scary to think, this could be progression. If so,  It can lead to a feeding tube. I didnot however contact my neuro about this issue. It just so happens my appointment happens to be around the same time these symptoms started.

It wouldn't actually occur to me to consult my neurologist with what you describe. I'd likely just assume it was pharyngitis or laryngitis or something related to a standard immune response to a bacteria or virus. Yes, I've experienced it many times, mostly in childhood. I think most of us have. And it always went away.

Of course, with MS, swallowing difficulties are of concern, but with the accompanying soreness, it doesn't sound like its related to a neurological issue. I'm not sure what you've looked at that leads you to conclude the outcome is 'grim'. I'd just leave it to the professionals to make that kind of call.
