ms and fatigue-If you're too tired - don't read this

Hi All- I have a few questions re fatigue-

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)

Tired of feeling tired!
Happy holidays and hope we all have enough energy to enjoy whatever we are up to this week!

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?
YES BUT NUVIGIL HELPS KEEP ME FUNCTIONAL.

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?
YES, SOMETIMES THEY ARE WORSE.  SOMETIMES I SIMPLY DON'T TOLERATE THEM AS WELL.  I SPECIFICALLY REMEMBER BEING NEAR COLLAPSE THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS LAST YEAR.  I DIDN'T THINK I HAD DONE MUCH.  JUST DIDN'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP HOURS.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?
NO, I HAVEN'T FOUND ANYTHING THAT REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN FATIGUE.  THE NUVIGIL HELPS ME STAY AWAKE.  NOTHING GIVES ME ENERGY.

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?
HAVEN'T TAKEN THEM FOR YEARS AND YEARS.  THE ONES USED THEN MADE ME MORE SLEEPY.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?
I DON'T KNOW THAT THE FATIGUE IMPROVES WITH EXERCISE BUT I DO FEEL BETTER ABOUT MYSELF IF I STAY MORE ACTIVE.  IF I'M NOT DILEGENT ABOUT BALANCING EXERCISE WITH REST, I CAN QUICKLY FIND MYSELF WIPED OUT FOR DAYS.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?
THE BEST I CAN DO IS SOMETIMES THINK THAT I FEEL "READY" TO GET UP.  I BELIEVE THE RENEWED AND REFRESHED FEELING HAS LEFT MY BUILDING FOREVER.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy?
MY STOMACH DOESN'T TOLERATE ALCOHOL ANYMORE.  BESIDES, MANY DRUGS TO TREAT MS SYMPTOMS MAKE ALCOLHOL COMSUMPTION RISKY.

FATIGUE IS MY LEAST FAVORITE SYMPTOM.  IT IS RELENTLESS, STEALS MY MOTIVATION, INTENSIFIES MY PAIN PERCEPTION AND OFTEN LEAVES ME INTOLERANT OF EVERY OTHER LIMITATION.

     Absolutely, YES!

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?  YES, YES, YES

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy? No

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?  No data, I've been on antidepressants for 20 years.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?  I'm too tired to exercise.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?  Some, especially mentally, but within a hour the fatigue reappears.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)  I rarely drink and never more than one.  No particular increase over my younger years in tipsiness.

Tired of feeling tired!
Happy holidays and hope we all have enough energy to enjoy whatever we are up to this week!

I use Provigil - only 100mg a day which is half the usual dose.  It really helps.  If I don't take it I could, and sometimes do, sleep all day.

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?
**No. I went through about 5-6 months of overwhelming fatigue after my youngest was born (she is 20 months) but that has eased, and for the most part I only get fatigued when I'm in an exacerbation. I tire easier than I did 2 years ago, but I'm not fatigued on a daily basis.

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?
**Yes!

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?
**I have been on Copaxone since mid-September. The worst of my fatigue was already improved and I haven't noticed any change in the fatigue I get during an exacerbation.

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?
**Not on antidepressants.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?
**I just started using the elliptical 3 times a week. I am working my way up to 30 minutes at a time (I'm at 16 minutes now). I have not noticed any change.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?
**For the most part, yes.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)
**I do not drink :-)

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired? Yes. I feel the best in the morning and more symptomatic in the evening.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise? Yes. Lately though, right after I run, I have some pseudo symptoms like hot spots on my legs, but generally speaking after my body cools down I tend to feel energized.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap? yes

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? no. I used to feel a bit tipsy after two glasses of wine, but I don't drink anymore because of the dmd therapy.

I don't necessarily feel more tipsy, but my spasticity is significantly lessened, and therefore my weakness is amplified.

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?
YES but there are different levels, the more you do the more fatigue you get, during an episode the fatigue is all encompassing, i breath therefor i exist.

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?
Sort of, the way I walk, balance, the tremors etc get worse the more I physically do but i wouldn't say its necessarily due to the level of fatigue I have, more the other way around. In truth when the fatigue is at its worse, I'm hardly compos mentis, I hardly notice whats going on.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?
Not on any

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?
Not on any

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?
Absolutely not, I would say that this type of fatigue is not something you can push through, forget exercising the blasted fork is too heavy! If anything I'd say that exercise generates more fatigue, and more weakness, the opposite of what you expect.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?
I cant say that it does anymore, when the fatigue is at its worse, I sleep 18 hour days and i still dont feel like i've rested at all. When the fatigue is at its best, I do feel more rested when i first get up but if the tremors are bad then that on its own is exhausting and my window of renewal is reduced.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)
Yes, we've actually discussed this on the forum, many find alcohol affects them now.

The one thing i'd like to point out, is that fatigue is nothing even remotely like being exstreemly tired, or even new baby and broken sleep for 12 months tired. Fatigue is a word used too freely by everyone (dr's to the postman), people say they are fatigued but in truth they haven't a clue what fatigue is really like, they are still functioning so from my perspective thats just tired.

To me fatigue is when you can't even speak or cry because it requires more energy than you've got, and this type of fatigue has absolutely nothing at to do with what you want to do or need to do or how you think or feel, it just knocks you flat, period!

Fatigue is an evil little critter!

Cheers...........JJ

I have learned to let MS do what she wants.  I go until I can't.  All my life (I am now 60), I needed only six hours of sleep.  It worked out great with a large family.  However, today I need that six hours and another two in the afternoons.  If I don't I pay dearly for it in the evenings.

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?
Most days yes. Although every now and then I get a couple of good days out of the blue. Love it when they come along, oh so rarely anymore.

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?
Yes.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?
No DMDs, but mine improved on prednisone until the sleeplessness caught up with me.

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?
No improvement on Cymbalta for fatigue.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?
Been too tired to try, but my work is like exercise (very physical) and some days I need a long nap after working.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?
As someone else said above, sometimes. It depends on how fatigued I am.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)
Definitely. My alcohol tolerance started to go down a few years back when all of this started showing up, especially the balance thing. I tend to stay away from alcohol except for special occasions, and then just only one or two drinks. My husband even noticed how much it impacted my balance and speech a couple of months back. He's not very observant when it comes to the physical stuff, so that's saying something.

Tired of being tired - I hear ya. I'm hoping to get a little boost with Synthroid here in the near future. We will see if that improves things. I think the vitamin D helped a little, and the Cymbalta may have helped a little.

Funny that you mention this - I just got back in the office after taking a nap in the bathroom.

> Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?

- yes

> Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?

- yes

> Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?

- Nope

> If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?

Haven't needed antidepressants - yet.

> Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?

Hard to tell - I'm going to say no.

> Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?

Depends on how fatigued I am.  Some days I do feel better after a nap, although it only lasts for a couple of hours.

> Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)

Yeah, I can't drink any more because being drunk + balance problems = me falling over.

I am so glad you brought this up!!! I can't get through my days without a nap or at least some rest time. It is awful. I have a hard time getting up in the morning but once I am up, I am ok. But after 2 or 3 hrs. I start to get tired again. I squeeze in some cleaning, and play time (with my 4yr. old) we have lunch and then I take a nap ( if she lets me)

I am not sure what the cause is, ( I am not dx with ms) I am not sure if it is my medication combo of synthroid, celexa, vimpat, vt.d, zanaflex. Who knows, I am not a lazy person, in fact, I am kinda a clean freak and everything has to have its place.

I hope you get the answers to your questions
Take Care,
Pam

Do you have fatigue - all the time - even when you're not having an exacerbation?
Yes.  I have very few motor signs (spastic legs/back.) Most of my symptoms are sensory.

Do you notice a difference in chronic symptoms when you are more tired?
If I over do it the spasms seem to get worse.  My double vision is more noticeable.

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved if you are on Disease modifying therapy?
Not yet.

If you are on anti-depressants, have you noted an improvement in fatigue?
I'm not on anti-depressants, but my Adderall seems to help

Have you noticed your fatigue has improved with exercise?
Nope.  Even simple walking will knock me out.  I've tried the recumbent bike, and I;m fine till I stop.  Then the muscle spasticy sets in.

Do you feel "renewed and refreshed" when you wake up in the AM or after a nap?
Brain wise yes.  Motion wise no.  It wll take an hours or so to get my legs stretched out.

Do you notice that a few sips of alcohol is all you need to feel tipsy? (a bit OT)
Alcohol tolerance is decreased.
