ms symptoms for 6 years?

48 yr old female. back in 2002 went to doctor for patchy numbness on my back and legs, also was having some kind of seizure like being in a dream state. had mri and it was fine. I didn't think anything of it until i started getting binocular double vision that would come and go for two years. then in august of this year i transfered to florida with my job and noticed exagerated symptoms that i have had on and off for years like my double vision is so much more frequent, extreme fatigue, muscle weekness, dizziness and balance problems. a few weeks ago i lost vision in the left side of my left eye for 5 minutes,(went to eye dr and my eyes are ok), and experienced a strange thing yesterday where i started laughing uncontrolably! And the biggest problem is the heat and humidity here, I cant be in the heat at all,I was once a big sun lover now i have to be in air conditioning or next to a fan. I have mri tomorrow. my mra was denied by my insurance. i am also having a caratid artery scan. Anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

i only had brain mri. I guess he is leaning more towards Myesthemia gravis. Does anyone know if my double vision has not returned yet does that mean the diagnosis is right. I have been on the mestinon for 3 days.

Hi Gibby,

I'm glad your tests were good, and that your neuro is treating you.  Keep us up to date on what's going on with you and if your symptoms are improved.

Did you have a brain and spine MRI?  My brain MRI came out clear too, I just went to my first neuro yesterdy and he is ordering the C spine MRI now.  Don't know what will happen if it is clear also.

Take care, and keep in touch.

A belated welcome from me Gibby.

I'm Shelly, and I'm so sorry you are confused. But glad to be here w/you during. This means that the Dr is going to have to keep on digging to find out what is going on it seems.

In ref to the reports you picked up.  Does it state what strength the MRI machine was?

When do you go back to the Dr.?
Thanks for joining us,
ttys,
Shelly

I picked up a report of my MRI before seeing my Neuro and from what I read there are no lesions or anything else for that matter. It was done with contrast also. The Carotid test also showed normal. I am confused.

Hi, Gibbydot. The results of your tests should be available almost immediately, as soon as the reports are dictated. Keep checking with the doctors who ordered them, and get copies of the written reports.

Based on my own experiences, I'd say you had the Doplar Ultrasound to make sure your brain irregularities are not caused by strokes. If your blood pressure has always been good it's unlikely you've been having strokes, so then that would leave MS. But wait for the test results, and then talk it all over fully with your doctor.

Hi gibbydot,

I noticed that you have been a member of the forum since 2006, but I want to welcome you back to the forum.  It has really grown since your last visit in 2007, and the people here are just the greatest group around.

Your symptoms do sound a lot like MS, but as Lulu states, there are many mimics out here that show some of the same symptoms.

I'm glad to hear the drs are doing an MRI.  What is most recommended is an MRI with and with contrast done with MS protocol.  Most preferrably on a 3T machine, as this machine is stronger and able to pick up better images.

Most times they do a brain MRI first, and then the spine MRI, and if they suspect MS strongly the drs will want to do a lumbar puncture to check for O bands.

There are lots of other neuro tests, so be prepared.  We are here for you with info and support when you need us.

There is a wealth of info in our health pages, this is a new thing since your last visit.  Reading them will give you a good idea of what the neuro is looking for and there is also some info on some of the mimics of MS.

Take care and keep in touch and let us know how things are going for you.

Hi gibbydot,
what you wrote sounded like my life except it been happening for over 8-9 yrs off and on, I was having TIAs (mini strokes) and thats what got the doctors really checking me out because you see I'm one of the many that doesn't have ins. But in the er they started testing and I had done what you scheduled for and my arties were clear then they did the scope down my throat to check my heart and found nothing the mris were done with and without contrast they found lesions in the tissue of my left peritial lobe. Lulus right they ruled out alot of other things and the neuro came in and said it had to MS its the only thing that was conclusive between 5 different doctors and that is were I'm at now waiting to go to MS specialist this month, I was so stunned when I was told but this forum has helped alot and I blessed with a good family support group.
So keep your chin up and know we are all praying for you and your family.
Take care
Suzie

Hi gibbydot,
what you describe here could be MS but it could also be a number of other neurological disorders.  Getting testing done to narrow the scope of disorders that it could be is definitely in order.  Has the doctor talked to you about cardiovascular disease?  Looking at the carotid arteries, along with the brain MRI leads me to think that they are suspecting stroke or mini-strokes.

Keep us posted on what they say after your mri is done.

good luck, Lulu
