I had a blood test for Mono yesterday. I had Mono when I was 18. Had a relapse when I was 37 after having been on Methotrexate to treat psoriatic arthritis. I was exposed to a lady with active Mono in the early spring. She was a therapist who came into our home to treat my son. She did not know she had Mono and was here several times. I didn't think I would have a problem. It was about 8 weeks after that my ON started. My eye doctor said EBV could cause ON. But, as far as I know, I did not have an active case of EBV at this time. Didn't feel like it anyway.
I just do not understand how the EBV works I guess. I thought you could only get Mono once.
I also had a blood test for Celiac disease. I have been on a gluten free diet for a while. Started adding things back in and suffered. I don't know if Celiac could tie into this ON or not. I don't have the blood tests back yet.

However, it still leaves me with a brain MRI that has a coupld of spots no one can see to agree on right now.

Sorry I did not give a good time line. Had Mono the first time when I was 18. Had it again at age 37 after chemo treatments, which I no longer take. Now at 44 I was exposed to active Mono and ended up with ON. Not sure if there is any connection but had blood tests done yesterday.  They say my problems could be viral. Which, I would take that dx in a heartbeat!

Hi,

My doctors just ordered EBV tests.  Waiting for results next week.  This could be a possible explanation according to them.  possible enough that they want to rule it out.

Celiac can cause neurological problems.  there is also high rate of false negative (ie. tests says you don't have it when you do) testing.  Best confirmation is how you respond to diet.

Celiac is also associated with higher than usual incidence of autoimmune conditions including MS, thyroid, among others.  I have diet challenge suspected celiac and hypothyroid and now they don't know what....

Do take the celiac seriously... If you even suspect celiac get very strict about staying on the diet.

Hello,
Thank you.  I have been on a celiac diet for about 3 years now. It has done wonders for my bowel problems!! And my skin has cleared up. I was dx'd with psoriasis several years ago. I also try to stay sugar free. Although that is hard. It feel deprived if I stay too strict. Oh, I also lost about 30 pounds! So, that is all good. My test for Celiac came back ok. That was drawn along with a EBV test. My EBV test is neg too. So, I am back on the bus to no where right now.
Well, at least my eye is getting better and I can see a little more! That is good news.

I hope they find what is going on with you. This is not a fun way to live is it. At least if we knew what was wrong we could deal with it.
