Check these articles on the 3T MRI. It is the best photo shoot you can get. I just had an MRI approved by my insurance company after being denied and then appealing. Now I will ask for the 3T in Oahu instead of the funky old machine in Kauai. I expect I will be denied and have to appeal. But persistence pays off. And what is worth more than your health?
We have seen you before haven't we? If not, Welcome! Without a doubt the 3T is the better machine, especially for visualizing the spinal cord. I have no facts to back this up, but it is my impression that an open MRI is less good for seeing MS lesions that the closed machine of the same strength.
I need to find something that compares the two. Of course, the manufacturers of the open machines claim they are equivalent.

3T without a doubt. I am claustrophobic and my doctor gives me prescription to calm me down. I don't feel any different but I no longer go into a panic attack in a closed machine. I also use the eye mask, ear plugs, and the thing under my knees. I've also been fortunate that the mri center I go to keeps the room cold. They always ask me if I'm too cold and I keep saying the colder the better! Go for the 3T. It is the gold standard now a days. Cheers, Jules
Kathy,
the posts above are spot on - the 3 tesla machine is more powerful than a 1.5 and would have the chance to catch more activity within the area being scanned. Keep us posted how it goes.
My best,
Lulu
Kathy,
You bet, go for the 3 T , much better choice. If you have trouble with small spaces, you can take a relaxing medication such as diazepam before going into the MRI tube. Piece of cake!
I found that the 3 T I first experienced made me feel very warm; the second one at a different place had lots of little fans keeping me nice and cool and comfy.
Good luck!
Kathy
Yes, I also say the 3 T is much better, my neuro at NYU had me redo my MRI's this month on a 3T (the old ones from two months ago were 1.5) so definetly go for it if you can!!

Kathy,
If you have access to a 3T MRI don't hesitate! Check out the health pages, and read the writeup on why the strength of the MRI matters.
