Any advice to help get off of methadone?

I have been addicted to painkillers for over 12 years and started going to the methadone clinic 4 years ago in hopes of kicking my addiction. I had the best intentions when I started going, but shortly after realized that I was probably worse off than before. Although I haven't relapsed or taken any pain killers besides methadone in the 4 years I've been going, I am now extremely addicted to methadone. I am so tired of depending on it to live my life day to day and so tired of spending $105 a week on it. I got up to 120mg maintained that dose for about 2 years. Over the past 2 years I started coming down about every few months to 80mg. I haven't come down since about 5 months ago until today. Today I went down to 70mg and would really like to keep coming down every week. I am absolutely TERRIFIED of the withdrawals and could use anyone's advice or tips on the best way for me to come down.    hi, I've bee on 90mil. for 41/2yrs,then i got real bad news and started coming down 5mil. a week for around 8 or 9 weeks,it wasn't to bad,. then i took a 2 week break,then started coming down 2 to 3mil a week.This morning Iwent down 2mil.,now i'm at 20mil.I need to be totally off by august 10th 2011,but I doubt it will happen.Read my profile and you'll find out why,ok.So take every ones advice and work off of that and do what works for you.           Take Care,and let me know how its going,BYE.

hi i think uve done great to come down to 70mgs , im still reducing myself , but id pace urself try and make a more relistic goal u can stick to like 2-5 mgs every 4-6 wks , i no it seems like it would take forever to get off at that rate but it does work and the slower u can do it the better that way ur less likely to relapse , ive seen it happen alot of times with ppl i used to know coming off there methadone really quick and the adjustments to much to handle , i started reducing 2mls every 6 wks 3yrs ago i was on 85mls and now im down to 26  mls , i wont say its easy cause its not , but doing it this way ive felt no withdrawals, and dont let anyone pressure u to come off quickley do it at the pace u feel is right , good luck and i hope it works out for u
