Stopping Metformin 32 weeks pregnant

by bny807, Sep 10, 2009 04:15PM
hello, after many fertility treatments we are finally pregnant with a successful pregnancy- i am currently 32 weeks pregnant and was taking metformin for boderline Pcos during our fertilty treatments. I was going to dc the metformin at 12 weeks, however, i began bleeding at that time (and after 4 prior miscarriages) we did not want to "rock the boat" so i stayed on it.. however, i have had hyperemesis the entire pregnancy. now that I am 32 weeks pregnant, my dr is saying It would be safe to discontinue it at this time, and it "might" help with the vomiting.  As much as I don't like the vomiting, I dont want to risk stopping the metformin at this point if there is ANY chance it could hurt our baby after coming this far!  Do you have any opinion on this? Thanks so very much for your time, its greatly appreciated!

Assuming that your baby is growing well and doesn't have any problems that you're aware of, the closer your baby is to full term (40 weeks) the lower the risk of any complications from prematurity.  Although the survival rate is excellent even at 32 weeks, the risk for problems from prematurity exist all the way up until 39 - 40 weeks.

Although the use (or discontinuation) of metformin is not really associated with prematurity, you should discuss with your doctor the risks vs. benefits of stopping the metformin.  One other consideration is whether stopping the metformin may have any effect on your blood sugars.  Only your doctor knows enough about your medical condition and history to advise you about the possibility of any problems if you stop.
