C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific chemical produced under conditions of inflammation such as infection.  It is non-specific, and does not by itself indicate an infection.

It can be used to "rule out" infections if it the value is low.  There are only a few rare conditions were a true infection would have a low CRP level.  The opposite, however, is not true: having a high CRP does not necessarily indicate an infection.

If the CRP is high, the doctors have to base the decision on whether there is an infection on the baby's clinical condition and other tests such as the culture results.  If the doctor decides the baby has an infection based on these other factors, the baby will need IV antibiotics for at least one week, depending upon how sick the baby is and what type of infection the doctors think the baby may have.
