Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is caused by having three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. All the cells in our body normally have two copies of each chromosome, one from our mother and one from our father. In Down Syndrome, there is one extra chromosome and instead of each cell having 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), every cell has 47 chromosomes. The effects of the extra chromosome are what lead to Down Syndrome.
Renal pelviectasis does not cause Down Syndrome. Your obstetrician should counsel you about the risk of Down Syndrome based on your age, your blood tests, and the results of the ultrasound.
