Fetal kidneys can sometimes have dilation (widening) of the collecting system or the kidney itself due to various causes.  If the dilation is minimal, it can sometimes resolve by itself after the baby is born.  More severe cases of dilation as usually the result of obstruction somewhere in the urinary tract.  If the kidney itself is enlarged, this is sometimes due to malformations of the kidney.

The ultrasound radiologist will have provided a report to your obstetrician detailing the amount of dilation and the appearance of the kidney.  You should discuss this report with your obstetrician , since there are many variations on the type of dilation and what it means.
