100% blockage in both carotid arteries?

by broderick782003, Jun 09, 2008 03:10PM
My grandmother was told her left and right carotid arteries were blocked 100% about 2 years ago.  They had previously went in and cleaned one of them and replaced one, but within 6 months they were both at 100%.  Is there another option for her, or is she, like the dr. said, a walking time bomb.  We asked the dr.'s if they were going to keep an eye on the small arteries in the back of the neck to make sure they werent blocking up. and he said there really was no point.  My grandmother has started acting weird here in the last couple of days.  She isnt eating or drinking and has been sleeping 16-18 hours a day.  Is this a sign that the other arteries are blocked also?

Hi.

I'm sorry to learn about her condition.  From the latest symptoms, it is best that she be seen by her doctors as soon as possible.  Increased sleeping time may mean that she's suffering from stroke like conditions that can be a direct consequence of the carotid blockage (since this is the major blood supply to the brain).  She might need invasive procedures such as embolectomy, or carotid endarterectomy to clear out the obstruction.

I hope that once you are able to bring her to her doctors, everything will turn out OK.

Wishing your grand mother all the best.  Take care and God bless.
