21 months old toddlers with myoclonic jerks

by simona99, Nov 13, 2007 12:10AM
Hello,

My 21 months old baby has been getting myoclonic jerks before falling asleep for the last two months. The paediatrician checked him and assured us it is just myoclonic jerks and not seizures as they happen only before sleep and he is fully conscious. However, reading a couple of forums on similar situations, I feel like maybe our paediatrician should've suggested we do an EEG and MRI. Should we insist on getting one to make sure that there is nothing abnormal? I asked for a referral to an EEG but she insisted there is no need for one.

Also, the paediatrician said that these jerks are normal, but how can be normal something that he did not have previously? Will they go away by themselves and without any medication? Are these jerks harmful to his brain in any way?

What should we watch for in terms of monitoring his jerks?

Many thanks,
Simona

Hi,

I can understand your apprehension. Its better to get a polysomnography (sleep study) done to confirm the diagnosis of nocturnal myoclonus (Periodic limb movement disorder). But, this disorder is more common in adults.

Since, the jerks are seen before the child goes for sleep, it is possible that it could be 'hypnic jerks, No specific treatment is required for hypnic jerks. See to it that the child is not over tired before going to sleep and gets sufficient hours of sleep.
