5 yr old with memory

I have a 5yr old boy with a genetic disorder and epilepsy. he has been having trouble remembering names with faces at school,  where he puts things, and what he has had to eat the same day. We don't notice him having any seizures. He has had all different types of seizures and is on topomax (topamax) and cyproheptadine for the headaches that are associated with the seizures. Wondering if maybe there is a type of seizure we are not aware of or something with meds.

Thanks for using the forum. I am happy to address your questions, and my answer will be based on the information you provided here. Please make sure you recognize that this forum is for educational purposes only, and it does not substitute for a formal office visit with a doctor.

Without the ability to examine and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of the symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Topiramate (or Topamax) is an antiepileptic medication that is also used for headache prevention and also used for seizures. It is a good medication but it does have side effects, some of which you have described. These include the concentration and memory difficulties. (These are typically the most disabling side effects people have while on this medication). Others include chest pain, fatigue/drowsiness, dizziness, paranoia, dry lips/eyes, GI changes, etc. Many people can tolerate these side effects or may not have side effects. If the medication is causing undesirable side effects, it may be worthwhile to discuss with your physician changing your son’s medication to another one.

With regard to whether these are seizures or not, I would suggest you discuss this with your child’s physician. Your son may need an EEG to evaluate the electrical activity.

Thank you for this opportunity to answer your questions, I hope you find the information I have provided useful, good luck.
