by maryfend, Jan 15, 2009 08:31PM
Iam a 49 y/o female who is 7 weeks post Total Hip Replacement! I have been on a cane since 4 weeks post-op! I get around my house ok without the cane! When i go in public i utilize the cane, cause other wise i walk with a gimp! I still take pain meds, but only when my left hip is really bothering me! I do my exercises and get in plenty of around the house walking! Basically the more active iam, the more it throbs! Just wondering if this is normal? Thanks s much!

I am a 57n y/o female who is nearly 5 weeks post THR. I thought I was doing good doing a little walking with a gimp inside without the cane or with min. weight placed on the cane. But in the last week while trying to place more pressure on my operated leg the pain in very bad and I was able before to walk at least a half a mile with the cane and a gait problem, now I cannot do half that amount. I have tried to rest more and return to the easier exercises. I was told I tried to do too much without pain medication. It just does not make sense. I used a cane prior to surgery but not with as much of my weight placed on it. I was not able to walk far for the past 2 years so it appears my muscles are in very poor shape and I cannot place all my weight on them. This may be normal but I too would like to know for sure. Should we push ourselves even when it hurts so that we will get stronger or should we back off? Should there be a lot of pain or pressure in the hip area or is this because the thigh muscles are not strong enough to hold the leg in place and the total weight of the body?
