said if she was left handed it would have been more consistent with her
past speech problems. Had an MRI performed, all normal. Blood work
also normal. Has had problems
with seeing zig zagging lines (day and night for 3 weeks). Has also had
problems with "everything going dark" in her eyes for 2 1/2 weeks. Has
times where she gets episodes where she feels hot inside her head,
sometimes hears sounds in her ears, sometimes she says she feels stiff
inside, sometimes she just says something is bothering her that she can't
describe. The neurologist said it could be migraine and has her on
100 mg. Carbamazepin twice a day. But did agree that with these symptoms
being a continuous versus intermitent problem it wasn't consistent with
migraine. We haven't really noticed any improvement since on
the Carbamazepin (3 weeks). Will be going to pediatric
Opthomology soon. Should I insist that the ENT test her vestibular
system? Any other ideas?
Dear Robin:
Sorry to hear about your daughter. I am alittle uncertain about all of her symptoms. When did she become aphasic, and how long did it last for? What sort of learning problems? What was the abnormality on the EEG? Since there is not a migraine area in brain (except for cluster headaches which is thought to arise from the hypothalmus), what did your doctor mean about migraine area? Since I have no idea what the lab work showed, nor have I seen the MRI, nor have I had the chance to examine he, I really can not give you much help. Both migraines and seizure activity, usually happen then the patient returns to near normal or baseline. Since your daughter is having continued symptoms, it really doesn't sound like either of these. The continued zig-zag lines and blackouts might be epilepsy but to have is so continuous without anyother problems is really unusual. If I had to make a guess, now this is a real guess since I have no data to guess with, I would think that she could have a metabolic disorder.
What I think you need to do is to gather all the information, lab work and MRI, and get a second opinion from a pediatric neurologist. Things are just to confusing.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD
