8mth continnuous headache, bladder problems PLEASE HELP ME !

by Debie__0__0, Dec 16, 1998 12:00AM

I went to ER April 98 with severe onset of headache. My Dr saw me first and sent me to ER for Lumbar Puncture as he suspected either Cerebral Bleed or Meningitis. Once a the hospital, the docotrs decided not to perform L.P but tried me on painkillers, BP meds etc for 11 hours before sending me home. I went back to ER screaming with pain less than 6 hours after I left. This time they performed L.P. but had 5 docotrs each have multiple attempts before they drew CSF.
Twice, blood red fluid was drawn off. After L.P. I had complete loss of bowel and bladder function. Despite 12 days in hospital there was no return of bowel function and bladder function was greatly comrpomised. 16 days post admission I finally gained control over my bowels (previously there was no bowel evacuation without enemas). My bladder movements have never recovered fully. I was catherised 3 times in hospital, and once discharged, bladder seemed to be less. July 98 I went into urinary retention, up to ER where they drained 1500ml of urine. Have had another 5 episodes of retention requiring indwelling catheterisation.
At present, have been under investigation for retention problems. All this time I have NEVER gotten rid of my headache. It becomes so unbearable that I cannot think, eat sleep etc. Pain is always behind my eyes, and at the back of my head. At its worst, my left eye is sore even to blink and it actually starts to bulge, people comment on it.
I have bladder evacuation 2 - 3 times in 24hr period, voiding amounts between 200ml - 1300ml with an average of about 740ml per void. Uroligist says self catheterisation not really possible because of my size (quite obese, and getting bigger by the day !). He says it is neurological not urological. Neuro says it is urological not neurological ! Just had a series of urodynamic studies and all they showed was that my bladder was not contracting. despite my greatest efforts at trying (I worked my way into a sweat trying to activate my muscles to empty my bladder during the test!). I have gained 6.5kgs (just over a stone) in a little over 3 weeks. My legs are so swollen and my feet never 'go down' any more. I feel like I am about to explode.
The intensity of my headaches is becoming worse. Last week, I experienced what I believe was a prolonged epileptic fit (I Dx Partial Complex Seizures unkown etiology, 3 years ago); whereby I jurked and writhed and sailivated and fluttered eyes and spasmed for approximately 7 hours before I could get help. I was aware of all this happening the whole time. It started in my right shoulder and arm as it felt like someone was pushing it to the floor then it went numb. When I managed to get to phone, I couldnt speak. A couple of hrs after admission to ER I could speak, but only one word, TREES ! even though I knew what I wanted to say. The day of the seizure I had had 4 nosebleeds and wen to GP cause my BP was 180/110. This is another 'problem' I have developed since April, a BP that is quite good one minute then goes sky high the next. Am taking different meds (coversyl and norvasc) for this.
It has been over a week, and my right arm still does not feel like it belongs to me. I can use it OK, but it gets really weak and tired easily. My right leg also is a bit 'tired' feeling. I have now developed staph infection in left lower leg. My legs feel like rocks
MY HEAD ACHES ALL THE TIME
MY BP KEEPS GOING UP AND DOWN
  MY BLADDER WONT WORK
  I FEEL LIKE A 'BLIMP'
MY BODY FEELS AS IF IT IS GOING TO EXPLODE
I NEED TO FIND SOME ANSWERS
ANY ADVICE OR CLUES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
  THANK YOU,
  DEBBIE
Dear Debbie:
Sorry to hear about all your problems.  I think what you need to do is get a second opinion about what has been happening to you.  The best thing to do is get all of your records and another, I would recommend a neurologist, doctor to go over you with a fine tooth comb with a good physical exam and then go over all your previous lab work.  Without examining you and going over your previous labs it is impossible to give you an accurate diagnoisis.  With all the problems with your autonomic nervous system this is a good idea to do this sooner than later.  Let us know if we can help, for an appointment you can call 1-800-CCF-CARE
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro MD
