9 yr with recently found septum pellucidum cyst

by eilen-blatchford, Oct 15, 1998 12:00AM

my 9 yr old daughter has been struggling in school for several year with
math & reading concepts & short term memory is getting worse.  our child
study team had her evaluated by a neurologist & he suggested an eeg &
cat scan.  we received the results yesterday 10/12- a mass in the pituitary
& suprapituitary area. the ventricular system itself is small for this age.
there is an obvious cyst of the septum pellucidum with extension into the
area of the posterior structures around the venae galen. there also ap-
pears to be a possibility of some poor formation or incomplete formations
of the corpus callosum in the mid line. also there is a suggestion of pos
sible sulcal enlargement at the anterior portion of the temporal tips
bilaterally.  what does this mean.  she has told me her head hurts, a head
ache, and just today she mentioned being dizzy.  an mri is scheduled for
next week but what options do i have for this sweet little girl.  does a
cyst turn into a brain tumor- what do we need to look out for now and in
the future.  Jill is wonderful & I hope that we can still teach her the
basics of education and she will do well.  thank you for your input - we
really appreciate it.  just terrified of the days to come & we are very
  concerned.

The first thing you need in this case is an MRI scan as this is a much more sensitive test to delineate the anatomy than a CT scan, the results that you already have sound like your daughter has some degree of developmental disorder of her brain, these abnormalities involve the corpus callosum which joins the two sides of the brain and this abnormally large sulcusat the front. A sulcus is a space between folds of brainntissue, the fact that it is enlarged suggests that the lobe concerned is not as big as it should be. These findings go a long way toward explaining your daughters learning difficulty, but I am impressed by the fact that you used the wordstruggling rather than inability to even get started.
In answer to your specific question, cysts do not necessarily develop into tumors, a cyst is simply a fluid filled space which can develop as part of the overall developmental abnormality.
At this stage I appreciate your worry but there not much more we can contribute before the MRI scan result  becomes available, if you have any further questions at that stage please feel free to repost with  additional questions based on the results.
I wish you luck over the next few days.
