I have been diagnosed with RR MS since 1988. Symptoms have been minimal. Some recurring facial numbness, weakness in left arm and hand (which comes and goes), memory problems have started. I hadn't been to see my neurologist for years...I went, had an MRI. Showed multple lesions (old ones, but how old?). Unable to compare with the old MRI because it had been destoyed. My Dr. was very unhappy with the MRI. When I came back for a follow-up appointment he gave me info regarding ABC meds. I read the info. Went back again to talk with him regarding one of choice...and he said maybe we would wait. Now my question--do I continue to wait. I feel my memorey is getting worse. Or do I see someone else . I don't want to be on the meds., but if they help. Thanks for your time.

I am very sorry that you have MS. The data is pretty good that the early one starts one of the interferons the longer between episodes. The earlier started during the course of the disease the better. If you were my patient, you would be on the medication. But you need to see how it plays with your situation. Get another opinion, go on the internet as your doing, get opinions, read the literature and make a decision. I can tell you that the vast majority of the patients at the Cleveland Clinic with MS are on one of the interferons.

I have RR MS, diagnosed in 1993, also with minimal symptoms. I would definitely recommend that you get on one of the ABC drugs as soon as possible. My neuerologist put it to me this way- "Cindi, if this is the one thing that will keep you out of a wheelchair someday, would you even hesitate?" Of course, the answer was no. I've been on Avonex for 3 years and feel it has definitely helped. I was on Betaseron (subQ injection) for one year, but had injection site reactions that wouldn't heal, so switched to an IM injection. Obviously, we're all hoping for an oral medication, but for now, one of the ABC drugs are the way to go. Good Luck! CindiM
