ACM with syrinx

Hi,
MRI  scan of my son, aged 16 years found  ACM  type I with  syrinx.  He is having pain  in right hand shoulder and no other symptoms. Neurosurgeon  suggested  Posterior fossa decompression.   I consulted three more neuro surgeons  for second opinion.  Two of them suggested  the same.  One neuro surgeon  suggested  monitoring the syrinx  for three months and prescribed medicine.   In this case  surgery is required?  What are the risks involved in the surgery.

Hi....
There r risks with all surgery and this is a major surgery....not to made light of.Most important is to get a NS that has made this condition the main focus of their practice.

I had this surgery in May and am doing better than prior to surgery....I am still healing,b ut see a difference already.

SOme risks are waiting too long and some of the symptoms may not dissapear bcuz they r nerve damage.

The decompression may help the syrinx shrink, but u may also have to have a second surgery fora shunt.....u may not know until after the surgery....there r no guarentees.

Surgery is to stop the progression of symptoms, but there is no cure...once u have chiari u will always have chiari.

I invite u to join us in the chiari forum here on MedHelp......for support and info .
