AEDs and menstration

Can anti-epileptic medications effect menstration?? Since I started taking my curent medication my period has been very irregular,(I'll have it twice a month and then I won't have it for two months or so ocasionally.) could these meds be effecting my hormone levels or something like that?
Thanks.

Dear Maria:

It depends on the AED. Not knowing what AED you are taking I cannot tell you for sure.  Valproate is one of the AEDs that can change you menstral cycle.  It elevates the testosterone while lowering the steroid binding proteins.  It has been known to cause polycystic ovaries.  When we put women on this medications, we always get periodic ultrasounds, especially if there has been weight gain.  Most of the others do not have pronounced menstral side effects.  However, every woman is different and needs to be evaluated.

Sorry, that I can't be more specific.  Let me know the specific AED.

Sincerely,

I'm currently taking Gabitril... could depression also be a sideeffect of this medication?
Thank-you again for your help!

Dear Maria:

Yes, although rare, Gabatril can cause some menstral irregularities.  There have also been rare reports of depression.  These symptoms are very uncommon but have been reported.  If you think these symptoms are being caused by your taking Gabatril, you will need to talk to your epileptologist.
