ALS

Both of my parents died of ALS. I was wondering if it is a good possiblity that I could contract this disease? i noticed both my parents had muscle twitching and muscle cramps, I am starting to have this going on. Everytime I bend my arm, foot, leg or even yawn too wide I feel a cramp coming on. My eye twitches uncontrollably and so does muscles in my arms and legs. Do you think I need to go to the doctor for this reason? Thank you.

Hi,

There is a known mutation that can cause Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This is a gene responsible for an enzyme, Superoxide dismutase1. Having both parents with the disease definitely increases the possibility that this will happen to you. So please, go to a neurologist at the earliest and get yourself checked up.

Even if the problem that you have is not ALS, there are other causes that need to be ruled out, like Multiple sclerosis, vascular diseases, liver and kidney diseases, hypoglycemia, certain drug toxicities.

Do keep me posted

Regards
