Abnormal EEG

Abnormal EEG

At the age of 15 months, my son had 3 seizures in the span of 7 hours after 3 days of no food or liquids due to gastrointeritis. He was hot to the touch before each seizure but no official fever was recorded. He was hospitilaized and put on a drip to get some fluids back in him and we were told that he had febrile seizures. He had an EEG recently (age 19 months) and the results came back abnormal stating that he had low activity in the left part of the brain. They ruled out that he had febrile seizures and believe it to have come from this part of the brain. As he's had no seizures since the last 3 (which the neurologist counts as 1 seizure giving they occured in one day), they can't be certain that it's epilepsy or anything else. He has an MRI in a months time, what could it mean to have low activity in the left part of the brain?

Hello.

A low activity EEG means a dormant seizure activity going on in the brain. The brain does not have a seizure, but is prone to seizure if favorable conditions are present, like high fever, sleep deprivation, etc.

It will be a good idea to consider medicines, after the MRI.

Thank you for your prompt response. We are doing our heads in to know what is going on with our little boy. What medicines are you referring to and will he be on them for life? Can the situation get worse?

Hi.

I am referring to anti-convulsants. After the Neurologist has seen the reports, he will be in the best position to choose the best medicine for your son.

Hope he grows out of it soon.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your invaluable advice.... It's difficult trying to be positive or neutral in that matter when we're 30 weeks pregnant at the same time!

I do hope he outgrows it too.

Hello.

I totally agree that this is a problem situation. But your state of mind will affect the growing fetus! You need to relax and take things as they come. Hopefully your son's condition will not get worse. And please let me know what happens at the neurologist's visit.
