Accident

by Jim, Mar 18, 2001 12:00AM
I was in a automobile accident Nov. 6, 2000. I sustained a neck injury in the wreck. I went to my family doctor and xray,s were done and everything looked O.K. Over the next couple of weeks. I had headaches every day, I also had some stiffness and pain in my neck. My doctor sent me for physical theraphy and the headache went away with the treatments. I still had some pain and stiffness and I had a popping noise in my neck. It pops every time I move my neck in any direction. I went back to my doctor and he sent me for a MRI Spine Cerival. The results were 1. Proable small Lateral Focal Disc Herniation at C5-C6.
2. Mild acquired canel stenosis at C6-C7 due to degenerative disc disease and arthritic changes.
I have also had a ringing in my ears for years probably due to years of working around heavy equipment. Since this wreck it seem that the nosie in my ears is much worse. My neck seems to move O.K. there is some pain "not to bad' and some stiffness. The poping noise in my neck is bothersome. My
question are,
1. Explain the MRI results.
2. Is the disc herniation what's causing my neck to pop?
2. Could this wreck cause the ringing in my ears to get worse?
3. I didn,t have any popping in my neck before this wreck and with what pain, stiffness, and the popping noise I have now, what are the chances of it getting worse in the future. The pain is proably mild, the stiffness mild to moderate and popping agravating.

Thanks, Jim

Dear Jim:

What did your neurologist tell you about the MRI findings?  What did your family physican tell you?  What I am telling is based on what you are telling me and not what I have seen on the MRI.  There seems to be a disc herniation or protrusion laterally at the level of C5-6.  With no comment on spinal cord compromise or foramen changes, likely not causing symptoms.  No comment concerning the various processess coming from the vertebrae, so likely not a factor in your symptoms.  The degeneration disc at C6 and C7 with the canal stenosis is likely long standing and non-accident related.  I can't tell you why the ringing in your ears has increased due to the accident.  There is nothing on MRI that would be convincing that it is related to your spinal anatomy.  Could the accident cause this, certainly but the process clearly doesn't seem evident from the MRI, what did the exam show?  This would be the same concerning the noise you hear from the neck area when you turn your head.  Sorry, I am not much help.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD

Hi,
Sorry about your accident. I was in a very bad accident in 1997, flipped four times..almost lost my left arm..about 400 stitches to save..
I too have developed more migraines, the popping and grinding noise, ringing in my ears and stiffness and pain in the back of the neck to the skull base off and on...Its aggravating to say the least. My MRI said the same thing about the C-5 and C-6 with the degenerative changes at 37 years old...Otherwise normal MRI...of the vervical area..It said mild narrowing of the spinal colum as well and the neuro said C-5 and C-6 radiculopthy..But nothing else..Had tons of Therary due to frozen shoulder from the extent of the arm injury and ulnur nerve damage across the elbow as well.  My migranes ahve become more frequent as a result..I have no clear cut Diagnosis or prognosis from the accident either..I think all of the new problems are related to the accident somehow, but I guess I will never be sure..
Wish you the best with your recovery...I also sustained a concussion frm the wreck and also a concussion again this past year from hitting my head very hard..But all my head Ct's are normal Thank the lord...So hang in there and I hope all of your popping and cracking and ringing resolves itself...Take care  Betty

1. On MRI should have said, "Probable small lateral focal disc herniation at C5-C6 affecting the right nerve root".

Sorry. Thank again, James

Hi,
The pain and stiffnes you are experiencing is probably due to the rearraingement your neck inccurred with the auto accident. Much happens as a result. Bones and the general shape of the cervical region changes leading to improper mechcanics of the spine, hence the poping you hear. The medical view of xrays are different than a chiropractic view, which leads to a different diagnosis for your problem. When your Dr. said everything looked OK, to him it did. Nothing was broke. But the changes are much more subtle than that and can be understood by a well trained chiropractic doctor.
Have your spine evaluated by a chiropractor, preferably by a refferal from a friend or work mate.
Good luck
