Acupuncture

I'm having problems with a bulging disc in the Thoracic spine (MRI diagnosed)  and now a Cervical disc is causing severe (at times) pain in the shoulder.  I have had two steriod injections in the past 3 months and I'm concerned of the side effects of more Epidurals.  I realize this is not a functions performed by the Cleveland Clinic but I would appreciate your comments on the use of Acupuncture for this condition.  Thanks

Thanks for your question.  Our currently understanding of acupuncture seems
to indicate that this procedure triggers the release of endorphines from
the nerve terminals, thus acting as an analgesic.  You did not indicate
whether other tests were performed to evaluate your spine problem.  In
particular, an electromyography (EMG) would be helpful in evaluating the
degree of nerve lesion caused by the disc problems.  If there are signs
of actual spinal cord or nerve root damage, your physician should consider
the possibility of surgical intervention, and not just symptomatic treatment
with analgesics or anti-inflammatory agents.
I hope this information is helpful.  Best of luck.
