Aggrenox

Diabetic for 36 yrs...Have had a heart attack in 96 and was put on balloon pump in Boston , then in 2001 hada major stroke, yr later 2 TIA's , In 06 had 6 medicated stents put in and , just recently had a catherization and was found to have a narrowed artery that was too narrow to stent and another that was blocked by a stent, Dr would have to go thr the stent to put a stent so we decided just to hold off, that was about 3 mos ago but 3 weeks ago had another TIa. Did a MRI and he found 6 strokes on the image and nerologist talked about the use of aggrenox along with my plavix and aspirin which I had already been taking for yrs, also said there was no data on the combination....left the decision up to me...pretty scary and Im no doctor...how can i make that kind of decision??

hi,there is paucity of data regarding combination of two, both of these drugs are indicated in stroke patients as they work by inhibiting platelet aggregation,hence chances of clot formation is less.

But there is lot of data regarding beneficial effect of combination of aspirin and plavix.Adding another antiplatelet agent(dypridamole in aggrenox) to already prescribed antiplatelets(aspirin and plavix) may or maynot be additive but chances of bleeding will definitely increase.
