Antibiotic prior to dental procedure following neck surgery

by Noahette, Aug 30, 2007 02:43PM
Wow....Was I surprised.  I am 3-1/2 months post cervical surgery with titanium implants (3 discs).  I just went to my dentist for a routine cleaning.  They questioned whether I was told to take an antibiotic prior to any dental procedure.  I did not know, so they called my doctor who said yes, I will need to take an antibiotic "for life" prior to any dental procedure, even a cleaning.  Supposedly with a knee or hip replacement, an antibiotic should be taken for up to 2 years following the surgery before dental procedures, but with the neck implants, it is needed for life.  My guess is because the neck is obviously much closer to the mouth.  I looked up the reason for this and found that during any dental procedure, even cleanings, bleeding can occur.  When bleeding occurs, bacteria enters the bloodstream and travels to other parts of the body.  This bacteria is only in the body temporarily, but because of the implanted device, the bacteria can stay in the body longer and thus cause severe infections.  I only need to take the antibiotic 1 hour prior to my dental procedure.  I was sure glad to find this out.  Has anyone else been told this and if so, do you have any other reasons other than I mentioned above?  Thanks.
