Any Ideas?

Female, 43.  Symptoms date to 12/01, with sudden sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear and dizziness. The dizziness lasted about 45 minutes. MRI was normal and most hearing returned except for the higher frequencies. Left with tinnitus.

Test 1/02 for autoimmune hearing loss and syphilis.  Autoimmune test negative but the first VDRL was positive. The second syphilis test (I believe it was a second VDRL) was negative. Confirming tests were also negative. Undiagnosis of idiopathic hearing loss.

Noticed muscle fatigue and odd pains. Legs are in good shape, but suddenly walking up stairs made them ache.   At night, woke to a sharpish twinge that ran down the front of thigh, or lower leg. Stretching has no effect. During the day, different pains would briefly appear in the knee, ankles, calf and thigh. Intermittent pains in arms as well, particularly bruised feeling in upper arm. Constantly sleepy, almost nodding off at my desk in the afternoons and falling asleep on the bus on the way home. Fell asleep while getting my MRI, even with all the noise.

Symptoms lessened over the next winter but returned in about May. Distance vision deteriorated about the same time, began seeing halos around lights, and developed a new crop of floaters.  Had a vision check and my intraocular pressure is elevated.

Supervisor suggested in June that I take Medical Leave as she had concerns about the number of errors I had been making recently.  Leave prescribed under a diagnosis of stress and depression. Thyroid test and a complete blood count – both normal.

The fact that your initial MRI was normal is good. Your symptoms do not definately point to one particular diagnosis. Some thoughts include an inflammatory disorder either involving your whole body or of the central nervous system. Other possibilities include mitochondrial disease  (a disorder of the bodies ability to produce energy), vitamin B12 deficiency, or complicated migraine. If you have not been evaluated by a neurologist, I would recommend it. A thorough examination would be helpful to determine further testing. This testing may include blood and urine tests, an EMG test (tests the muscle and nerve function), and a repeat MRI if you have had a significant change since the last MRI. I hope this is helpful.

How about tests for Lupus. False negative for syphilis is sometimes{or so I've read} an indicator of Lupus.
As well as fatigue and such.
