Appropiate meds

Last summer I had a small stroke in my left eye. I had all the tests and have(head MRI) small vessel infarcts, < 50% carotid blockage, all blood, cholestrol heart ultrasound normal. The Dr. put me on (Daily)aspirin-<100mg--7&1/2 mg coumadin. In the past two months I have experienced 2 UGI bleeds. The last one left me with hemocrit of 29, weak and tired. The doctor took me off my meds for 4 days and told me to return to the same dose of my meds.I feel that the dose is too much for me and expressed this concern to him. His response was that it has to be that high. Each bleed has been when my INR was between 2.5/3.3, He maintains that the dose is appropriate. I am terrified of another bleed and feel that perhaps he doesn't know what he's doing. I plan to seek another opinion however, circumstances prevent that for a couple of days.Do you feel that I am safe taking this amount for the next few days?

Dear Neoma:

What your physician is doing with your medications is appropriate under certain conditions.  We have used this combination many times.  Complications do arise and many times the medications will be altered.  Your physician must have reasons for maintaining your current doses of medications.  I would continue on what your on and see what the second opinion has to offer and then make a judgement based on the information.  (It may be that an enteric coated aspirin might help.  But check with your physician)

Sincerely,
