Are AVMs hereditary or just genetic?

I have had two craniotomies @ Cleveland Clinic (love you guys)and a cerebral hemorrhage due to an AVM (arterial venial malformation) from the time it was initially dicovered @ 14 years of age.    I am now 44 and the mother of two and wonder if the same thing can happen to them.  Although I was told in 1978 that it is not hereditary but it is a genetic malformation of the brain, many years have past and I just want to be sure that the medical realm has not determined otherwise since that time.

Forever indebted to the neurosurgical teams of CCF and to the staff on the adolescent floor!

Thank you,
