Arm & shoulder pain

by arm1, Nov 19, 2007 02:37PM
What can I do for my dominate arm ache? It started within the last
few months. Now I'm having trouble with the smallest task that I always
took for granted, like opening the dog bin, brushing my teeth or hair.
I'm unable to sleep well and can't sleep on that side. It keeps me awake
at night. The whole arm is sore, from my fingers to my shoulder.

Let me give a little background. About 6 months ago we moved. Prior to that I
had been doing most of the packing and lifting of boxes. Then during the move
I was doing the same. Basically it's been continuous from the move, to yard work(
pulling vines from trees and planting) and house work(hauling, lifting, unloading boxes).
I was able to get in some swimming in Jul,Aug,Sept but I still had the arm ache.
You know when you work out and your muscles ache but the pain goes away after
a few days. Now the pain just doesn't go away. I also work at a computer for 8 hours,
at least 4 days a week too. Not sure if it's age, almost 53 yrs or if I overdid it or what
the heck is going on.

Based on the background you have given, it appears that you have been continuously using that arm to do mechanically stressful tasks like lifting and hauling.  Your symptoms might be a sign of overuse and muscle fatigue, not necessarily an underlying neurologic disease. Have you tried completely resting that arm from a few days to at least a week, and taken over-the-counter pain medications?
It would be best to initially consult an orthopedic surgeon to assess your condition and probably refer you to a physical therapist to address the arm ache.

even 800mg of IBprofen hasn't helped. However, I'll attempt to rest that arm until I see my
PCP next Monday. Thanks for the advice.

According to my PCP, I have symptoms of tennis elbow and have strained my rotator cuff.
Just thought I'd let you know how right you were in your diagnosis.
She has me taking nabumetone during the day and cyclobenzapine at night.
And she recommended ice packs on each area for 15 min, 3x a day with some minor
exercises. She'll check me again in two weeks(if not better) or 4 weeks if better after 2 weeks.

Thanks again for your help.
