Autograft vs Allograft

Autograft vs Allograft

Have any studies been done addressing the success of autograft versus allograft with lumbar fusions? Also what materials are used to pack the BAK cages besides the bone?
Dear Betsy:
Only bone is packed into cages for fusion purposes. Both allograft and
autograft can be used. Autograft is usually associated with slightly
higher fusion rates especially in smokers. The major problem is that
harvesting the autograft can cause significant discomfort at the site
of the harvest (although for BAK cage packing a lot of the bone from the
decompression can be used). If you have any further questions please
write back!
