Back Pain Following LP Shunt

In 1992 I had an LP shunt placed for severe pseudo tumor cerebri. Within 5 months I required 2 revisions. After that, all was well. However, since that time, I have experienced regular, sometimes severe, persistent back pain. I visited several doctors within 2 years of my surgery and finally was sent back to a neurosurgeon when no one could make a diagnosis. The neurosurgeon told me that the pain was due to the shunt and that there was nothing that could be done. I would have to live with it. I've lived with it for 12 years now and I'm wondering if maybe there is something new that can be done? The pain interferes with my daily activities and I feel limited in the things I can do. It's very frustrating and very painful. I'm tired of this and would love to find a solution. Thanks for any direction you can provide.

I would recommend having a second opinion at an academic center with a neurosurgeon who specializes in shunts. Dr Mark Luciano is our specialist here at the Cleveland Cinic Foundation.
