Back Pain/surgery options

by Disciple, Mar 14, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 56 year old male and have significant arthritis at L-1 and L-2 from a football injury in 1965.  MRI and EEG shows that the disc is gone and that the nerve opening is narrowed causing leg pain and burning sensation at the knee.  I used to run 5 miles a day, but now walk with a limp on bad days. I am in pain most days.  Hanging upside down gives temporay relief. My hand surgeon indicated that surgery to enlarge the nerve opening was a possible option and recommended Dr. Kalfas to give an opinion.  What steps do I take to come down for a work up?  I have tried therapy to no avail.  I stretch several time a day.  Thank you.
