Bilateral postrual tremor spreading to tongue

by tommyp181, Feb 21, 2008 08:44AM
Hello I am a 22 year old male.

A year ago i noticed a shaking in my thumbs and little fingers. It is not apparant at rest or when moving or performing tasks such as eating or drinking. However it is noticable when I hold them against gravity (especially after the muscles in the finger/thumb have been used e.g. pushing on something) . The frequency is around 5-6 per second. Since then the tremor has spread to all my fingers and hands. It it most pronounced when I rotate my wrists in circles (eg. pretend to draw a circle in the air with the movement from the wrist) and my whole hand moves in a very jerky, trembling fasion . This jerky movement is also visible when I rotate my ankles but to a much lesser degree (although this may be physiological and I am just imagining it!) There is no tremor in my lower limbs . The tremor has also spread to my tongue. It is a coarse tremor that is only present when I protrude my tongue halfway out of my mouth and also occurs at around 5-6 per second. I have experienced no other motor symptoms. I have an uncle with Parkinson's disease who first noticed his symptoms aged 55. Although I am much younger, I am worried that my symptoms may be due to parkinsonism. Could this be Parkinson's, or it more likely to be essential tremor (NB I have no family history of essential tremor).
