Birth Asphyxia and abnormal EEG record

Is there any recovery for my daughter who had Birth Asphxia.
Born on 10th MAY 2007. 14 Days in ventillator. Frequent convulsions are there. Now shifted to Incubator with Oxygen.
All other activities of child are normal. Some secretions are coming out from mouth and to be suctioned 2-3 hourly. Breast feed through tube only. 2 hourly 40 ml milk. Urine and stool output are normal. Some times tachapnea is there.

EEG Report: Sleeping Record:-

Background activity is slower and of lower voltage. Sharp waves were seen multifocally, specifically in posterior leads of both sides.

Conclusion : Abnotmal record, to be repeated after 2 months.

Please help me with your valuable advise.

Look forward to your kind replies.

Best Regards

Sheji Jacob

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your information. God Bles You Sir.
I am sending you detailed report.
CT Scan Report – Mild Edema
MRI Report:-There are bilateral high signal intensity lesions in basal ganglion, thalami, midbrain and temporal lobe tips suggestive of hypoxic changes. In the capsuloganglionic region focal central low signal in all sequences may represent haemorrhagic focus or calcification.
- Normal supra and infratentorial ventricular system, basal cisterns and cortical sulci.
- The brain stem and foramen magnum region and upper cervical spinal cord are unremarkable.
- No abnormality detected in the orbits sellar/parasellar regions, paranasal mastoid sinuses.
- No space occupying lesions identified.
- No midline shift or significant mass effect.
- No significant signal alteration of white mattter.
- No intra or extra axial collections.
- No gross vascular abnormalities.
Conclusion:- Hypoxic changes (of profound hypotension) in deep grey matter bilaterally with focal areas of bleed.
Due to the secretions the doctors didn't tried to feed by sucking. Once the secretions stops they wil try for suck. Now very less secretions and is not frequent. Yesterday they removed indirect oxygen & she is breathing normally.
Now she is in incubator for the last 20 days.
Please help me with your kind reply. Thanking You, Sheji

I am so sorry for waht has happened to your baby.  I am a pediatrican and had extensive experience with newborns who suffered severe asphyxia.  It is hard to say how much you daughter can recover from this.  She is a month old and still cannot suck, needing to be tube-fed.  The early seizures were not a good sign.  She will likely have significant neurologic problems.

That much I'm sure you already know.  But, babies, more than adults, have a great capacity to surprise us with how well they do.  I learned never to make dire predictions, because then a child would prove me wrong.  You need to learn to take every day as it comes, rejoicing in each bit of improvement.  what's done is done, and the brain damage can't be reversed, but in reality at this point we don't know if there are parts of her brain that were damaged less.

She may be capable of some real progress.  So don't lose all hope.  Live in the now.  I had many very seriously brain damaged babies in my practice over the years, and was often touched by how hard they try to show us that they are in there.  She needs lots of love and needs to feel your hope.

I hope this helps, Quix
