Bothersome Symptoms

by Karen__0__0, Dec 14, 1998 12:00AM

I am 35 y/o female, 5'4", 125 lbs., married with 3 young kids.  For the past 2-˝ years I have experienced a pressure or fullness feeling on right side of head that occurs approximately 2 inches above right ear.  This comes and goes throughout the day.  I also experience a "smoke-like" smell that comes and goes away quickly throughout the day.  The smell seems to be on my right side only.  I also have light sensitivity in my right eye and the vision is worse (increased near sightedness), which required a stronger prescription in glasses at last visit to eye doctor.
I have neck pain in lower right of side of neck.  Can't turn head completely to right side without pain.  Sometimes awaken with tingling fingers or arm and sometimes both hands will be numb upon awakening.  The left side of my head (including vision) has felt perfectly fine.  My PCP ordered a MRI of the brain last week it came back negative.  I have a neurologist appointment in January.
Any ideas as to what may be causing these bothersome symptoms?
Dear Karen:
Sorry to hear about your symptoms.  When we hear about symptoms that reoccur with periods of returning to normal, we tend to think about either migraine or seizures.  It sounds like in your case the etiology may be migraine headaches.  It was a very good idea to get the MRI, and especially good to see a neurologist.  You really need a good neurological exam, just to rule out the evil things that could be causing the symptoms.  It would be my guess that you have migraines.  Let us know what happens.  If we can be of further help, let us know.
Sincerely,
CCF Neuro[P] MD, RPS
