Bulbar palsy

Bulbar palsy

My daughter age 47 has been confirmed with bulbar palsy, she has had a tube put into her stomach to try and put on weight which is working,,her speech swallowing dribbling etc is all bad. The thing that is playing in the back of my mind is how did this happen? I am a healthy 68 year old and my mother is a healthy 90 year old but her younger sister died about 80 years old with Parkinsons disease, would there be a link in the genes and I believe that my Mothers Mother also had Parkinson or some type of nervous condition.. Also my ill daughters daughter has developed Epilepsy 18years old. Is there any correlation between these illnesses or is it just a miserable co=incidence. Also is there any reading available in laymans language that can be purchased. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Liliandb,
Parkinson's disease does run in family. Autosomal dominant mutations of SNCA have been identified in several families with inherited Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is thought to have both genetic and environmental causes. Familial Parkinson's disease was first discovered in an Italian family with a defective alpha-synuclein gene. The National Parkinson Foundation is one website, where you can find relevant information.
