Burning, tingling, and stabbing head pain.

by Trinese, Sep 03, 1999 12:00AM
Hello I am a 35 year old female with the following problems. Last year I begun going to the doctor because of severe head pain, muscle weakness, burning and tingling in my feet and hands(also feet swelling at night) and also a right hand tremor. I had a mri done which was ok. The only test that came back was a borderline pos. ana, pos. anti-ro, sedrate as high as 80 and low red count and high wbc and also trace of prtein in urine. In June of last I sufered what seems to be a stroke that left me unable to walk without asst. for 2 and half months. My treatment was predisone and then Imuran was added. The headaches got better and I begun to feel better so I 'am now off(after a year of meds. My symptoms now are stabbing head pain again, numbness in my big toe, numbness in my hands at night(pinky and index finger invovled, swelling in ankles, lump on shin, facial burning and rash, swelling in hands, and pressure in chest area. At times I have pain in my temple area and pain and weakness in my face. I have never had a mri of the spine but I have had a x-ray which they said that a had a spasm on my cervical spine. The pain in my head is sometimes unbearable and at times I have also had pain and tingling down my arm. The doctors are diagnosing with lupus. I am seeing two rheumy's , the one that was with me through the rough times thinks that I sould be on medication, but the one that I started seeing this year feels that it is just a mild case and I should just take planquile.Sorry this is so long. I forgot to mention that my right leg swells when my cycle starts. Thanks for any input. Trinese

This is a complex, multifaceted problem but certainly symptoms you describe are consistent with a diagnosis of lupus.
As regards the treatmment necessary there is really not sufficient information available by means of this medium to make specific treatment recommendations.
It is possible that you have a separate problem in your neck area which is causing headaches and arm symptoms but this becomes very hard to tease out when you have another complex disorder which causes multiple different symptoms.
An MRI of the cervical spine would certainly help to differentiate between the two conditions.
If there is an easily treatable problem with your cervical spine it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to fix it, so an MRI of this area would be a good idea.
I hope this answers your concerns, you did not ask a specific question, but I presume this is your main area of interest.

I forgot to tell you that I have tested neg. for antiphosholipid antibodies. Is it possible to have these antibodies and test neg. for them, The reason I ask is because I past clots each cycle. Thanks so much.

Passing of clots during menstruation is very frequent and is so commonn that it cannot be taken as evidence of possible positive anti-phospholipid antibodies.
In this situation I would be confident that the test is accurate.

I have read that lupus usually carries a high ana. Is it possible to have the ssa antibody in it's place? My ssb is negative and I don't fit sjogren's.Also, can you give me more information on the ssa antibody(what illnesses are associated with it)? I just want to be sure. Thanks again.

I have been experienceing migranes for 6 or 7 years and have also been experiencing a very tender scalp.  Mainly the crown of my head. And the area is so tender that touching is painful.  I also usually at night time begin to itch all over. The scratching causes welts and dosen't help at all. I am mostly concerned with the scalp problem.  I have been told that it can be seen as an aura.  If so I would like to do what I must to stop the discomfort.  Any information would be greatful.

Thank you for you time,

Darlene
