Burning sensations associated with stroke

August of "98 my father suffered his second mild stroke, the other one being in Aug. of '97.  He has not suffered much damage as a result of the stroke but it has left him with a tingling, burning sensation.  This sensation is never located in one area and moves everywhere!!  I have read other cases, very few, with similar symptoms.  He has seen 7 Drs. and is desperate for answers.  He is now under the care of a neurologist who is running some tests which you recommended.  He is taking a lot of medications for other ailments, one being high blood pressure which took 6 months to get under control. If you have any further information on this condition that I can pass on to his physician please let me know.  (Resting seems to have an impact on the burning, it alleviates it)  Thank you very much.

Burning and tingling sensations can occur as a result of lesions in the central nervous system, including strokes. Tests are not always showing abnormalities, but in any case it is possible to treat these symptoms for themselves. Medications such as Neurontin, Tegretol, Dilantin, or Elavil have been used with success in our patients. It is a trial and error process, progressively increasing the dose of one medication until a beneficial effect is obtained, switching to another medication if no benefit is seen at a usually effective dose. Of course, it is necessary to verify that there is no contra-indication, and no potential interaction with other medications. Sometimes, the burning sensations gets better with time spontaneously, but if these symptoms are bothersome, it is worth trying to treat them. I encourage you to discuss this with your doctor.
I hope this helped. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.
