Burning skin sensation...

Since March 2002, I have been experiecing this God awful sunburned sensation on my skin in different areas.  It started with a slight pain on my arms in 2002, went away, then came back in May of 2003 after a stressful period and attacked my face and arms.  Long story short.... I started Zolft in Septenber 2003 for depression that the burning caused and it took the burning away until December of 2003.  It came back but was not quite as intense and it had been.  It went away again and I noticed it occasionally on my face.  Just last week (July 21st to be exact) I started aching all over and the burning started back a couple of days after that.  My calves feel like they are burned, my arms have spots that feel burned, my knees have spots that feel burned.......

I have had an MRI of my brain in Aug 2003, a neck and c-spine MRI of June 2002 - both were clear.  I did stop the Zoloft back in May of this year and did fine up until now.

I have been told it can be Fibromyalgia.  What in the world can cause a person's skin to hurt this way?????

Please, if you have any answers or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.  I'm 32 years old, have a 6 yr old son and a husband.  I'd like to believe that it's nothing serious.

Thanks!

Sherry

Without examining you and taking your history I cannot provide an accurrate clinical diagnosis. I assume your neurologic examination is normal. The symptoms you have described involve various regions of your body at various times. I agree with having the MRI of the brain and crvical spine to exclude structural problems, and inflammatory disorders. B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, and rheumatologic conditions (such as connective tissue disorders and fibromyalgia) can give diffuse symptoms. These disorders can be evaluated with blood work, and a consultation with a rheumatologist. Also, if other causes have been excluded psychological stressors can also cause similar symptoms. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I have the same thing and they are calling it myofascial pain due to my back condition and.or secondary fibromyalgia! I have severe stenosis of the lumbar spine, degenerative disk disease and large ostephites in my neck - wide spread aggressive arthritis,
and other things
I have yet to find a doctor who knows anythingabout this although my neurologist did prescribe NEURONTIN aka Gabapentin which is the generic name. It did NOT help!  I use Pennsaid anti-inflammatory topical (prescription in Canada) lotion with duclofenec (anti-inflammatory) and it helps a lot. I went through a series of myofascial release treatments to no avail.
I have found that taking supplements, particularly the B's, amino (liquid gel caps) acids, and a broad spectrum vitamin complex helps a bit. My burning is further aggravated by weather - low and high pressure. Ibuprofen if you can take it, or Motrin on the shelf might help you. I cannot tolerate it.  I think you should probably see a neurologist for a consultation and please consult your primary physician regarding any of my suggestions. I am not a doctor, I have a large support group for people in chronic pain but you must always consult your physician before trying anything.  I am sorry about your skin pain, I agree that its painful and miserable. I have it all over as well with patches in places. I am not sure if it is a component of Fibromyalgia but it is usually called myofascial pain. Hope this helps, Good luck, Mermie

Sherrydeinse,  It is possible that you may have Post herpetic neuralgia.  I have the same symptoms that you do and it took over 2 years to be diagonosed.  This skin pain is horrible isn't it?  I have read everything possible on the subject of shingles (herpes zoster) as well as finding the right doctor to treat me.  You might not have even have realized that you had shingles and if it goes untreated it is possible to get post herpetic neuralgia, which is what I got.  Read about Shingles on your computer and this will give you all the information you need.  The last Neurologist I visited gave me no hope, but there is always hope.  I currently use a lidocane patch on the area that is most painful (my lower back) as well as taking Neurontin (300 mg) as needed.  I always take 600 mg. of Neurontin at night so that I can sleep.  At first the Neuorntin made me a bit drowsy, but after my body adjusted the side effects went away.  My MD also treats me with accupuncture.  I am not keen on taking too many meds, but I do find that the Neurontin does take the pain away.  I have good days and bad days.  I know that shingles is usually associated with the elderly, but I am in my early fourties and healthy.  I hope this help you.

...more burning skin; problem started at end of May 2004 with pins and needles in hands and feet, by middle of June I also had some numb patches on feet; by middle of July ends of fingers  becoming tender and very recently full-on burning in hands, feet and  back (as if sunburnt).   Awaiting further referral to neurologist (first one - in June - did very cursory exam and said it was probably nothing).  Relevant blood tests done in June all normal. I am relatively fit 41 yr old.  Does anyone have any advice about diet or complementary therapies, eg acupuncture was mentioned..?

I am a 36 year old male and have had similar symptoms for the past 3 months on and off which all started after a stressful period. I started to get tingling sensations in my right foot which then moved to my left foot, then spread to hands, arms, body, and face. Then the burning to skin started. I can not go in the sun as my skin is so sensitive. I can actually feel dust particles on any surface which is a horrible feeling.  I am also getting spontanious prickling all over my body.
I went to a neurologist and had an array of blood tests with all normal results.  Had an MRI of brain and cervical also negative.  Finally he found Bilateral Ulnar neuropathy in my elbows with an EMG which is nerve damage in elbows.  I am now wearing elbow pads which are supposed to be worn for 3 months. If this does not work he said surgery to move the nerves may be necessary if arm and hand weakness develop.  I am very frustrated as he cannot zoom in on anything yet.
I am not sure if it can be psychologically related.  The prior physicians comments are encouraging if that is a possibility. I  have a history of panic attacks and anxiety whereby I take .5 mg of Xanax nightly before bed. However, I have never experienced the burning or tingling ever with my panic condition.
Right there with you.....

Following Dave`s contribution I was unclear Dave about  whether your elbow problem was causing the other sensations?  I have some recent loss of sensation in the hard skin areas of the elbow (beyond what is normal).  Your comments on stress also ring true for me as my tinglings started during an especially stressful week during a stressful period.   I had been on an SSRI for a number of years although I had just discontinued before the problem started.  I had also jsut had a month of St John`s wort.   Have you found anything which helps - I intend to go on an intensive vitamin and supplement diet for 6 weeks to see if it brings any improvement.  Also as I mentioned yesterday  I want to try acupuncture (and my doctor here in London has suggested cranial osteopathy although I don`t know what it is exactly).   Keep in touch.

I've experienced burning and needle-type skin sensations on various occasions over the years.  Sometimes they were very painful, sometimes there were visible effects.  With a little research, and a few tests on myself, I was able to pinpoint what was going on with me and it is especially noticeable if i have already a little bit of reddened skin due to sun exposure, and/or on an empty stomach.

My vitamin supplements.  Check it out, you'll find that symptoms of overdose and toxidity of many vitamins include skin reactions similar to the ones you're experiencing.  If you're taking vitamin supplements, this may be the culprit and you should reexamine just how much are in those little over-the-counter multi-vitamin packets, and whether it's too much for you.  Check the RDI/RDA of vitamins, don't trust the DVs (percentage ranks) that are usually found on those friggin' containers.  Some of those companies are just nuts with the quantity they put into a single tablet, and this is only compounded if you are taking a mix of vitamin supplements in addition to a multi-vitamin.

If you are not taking supplements, vitamin deficiency, oddly enough, can also result in skin reactions.  Too much, too little, a problem.

Anyone who has a sunburned sensation on their skin with deep, shooting pains look up the shingles...or the herpes zoster virus. This is the same herpes that manifests chicken pox. It is in a different family than genital herpes or cold sores. I am only 30 and have now had the shingles twice. Extremely painful, I know. It will probably break out into a rash within a week, but go to the Doctor and they will prescribe a lidoderm patch, valtrax and pain killers. I can honestly say that the lidoderm patch is amazing. My first out break came at 19 and the lidoderm patch wasn't available and I suffered terribly. There is no need to suffer from this painful virus anymore. Modern medicine is incredible. The valtrax will suppress the virus, and I don't take pain killers but a full bottle of percocet was prescribed.

I began experiancing some stinging pain in my skin in April 2004, age 34.  I thought it might have been an over exposure to a chemical called calcium stearate. Any information I find on that suggest it could be, but nothing quit describes my exact symptoms where this prikling feeling can move around my body to any location. Also somtimes its on my chest and back accompanied by redness. But no real rash and no blistering. I began feeling like it might be a nervous disorder, I have almost linked it to strong feelings of anger if I were to say be thinking about some matter and feel note that after I felt it, it was linked to the anger. So I began trying to stop worrying so and be calmer. This almost has seemed to help.  I went to a doctor about the exposure to the calcium stearate, he said that it might very well be an allergy and put me on Prednizone and Allegra for about two weeks. This seemed truely to help. My 2nd day off of the prednizone and 4th day off of the allegra I began to feel wosened prickly sensations again, but not yet as bad as before. I cleaned my cargo van thoutougly of the calcium stearate even though the dust basically was spread all around and maybe even in the ventalation, it was a very find white powder. I just didnt know how to deal with it properly when I spilled it.  Anyway I'm not totally sure that this calcium stearate is the problem at all. It might be coincidental, I was also having some periods of stress at this time. Also I have been using those hi energy drinks some and plan on stopping that to see if there is an effect.  My attack yestarday was a few hours after drinking that "No Fear" hi energy drink.  But yes this prickling feeling is not fun, I wish everyone the best of luck on finding out what is wrong. But at times I could swear it was tied to nerves.

Hello.. I too am experiencing extreme burning pain all over my body.  It started in Aug 2000 when i was involved in a car accident; i fell down stairs in Dec 2000 and another accident in June 2002.  Since these trauma, i have experienced off/on symptoms of burning sensation internally... nothing you can visually see or feel, just pain!  From the top of my head at times, my face, arms, legs and bottom of feet.  I saw a neurologist and rheumatologist earlier to no avail.  I have been told i may have fibromyalgia, but no luck in finding a doctor to treat me for that -- or even one that understands what the disease is or how to treat it.  I feel like everyone thinks i am crazy or something!  Any ideas of what type of doctor I can try next or treatment will be greatly appreciated.

I have taken Neurontin off/on for two years now.. it worked before, but now seems to make symptoms worse.  Help!

I also have had aweful burning on my skin for 1 1/2 years.
I had terrible, almost violent tingling allover my body after my c-section the night my secon daughter was born 9 years ago.  The only thing that made it subside was an enormous amount of lotion all over my skin. I never had the symptoms again. then After 3 months, one night- I think it was after one of my many foot surgeries, I started feeling very uncomfortable tingling all over my legs, acompanied by dry itchy skin. After that for  seven years every night as soom as I would lie down to sleep the pins and needles and crawling on my skin would return and keep me from sleeping.
After 3 years the doctors finally put me on atarax for anxiety.  It didn't help much. I have also always been an anxious person and have suffered from  severe sleep disorder for the last 25 years.  Shortly after all this,I aquired chronic gastritis which my specialist attributed to stress. I truly lived in a stressful situation with very noisy neighbors all around which made my sleep disorder worse.  The sleep medicaton Temazepam I was given for sleep seemed to finally help with the pins and needles. But my living situation got worse and worse and  when I finally decided to make a move to a different and quieter place , a year and a half ago ,I to moved into a place which happened to be previously occupied by a smoker.  One week after I moved into the place I got a sinus infection and pain in my sinuses and burning inside the right side of my head and out on the right side of my scalp.  Soon the skin on my face and hands started peeling off. I went through great pain and stress during this time and although I moved out two months later  I woke up with burning  all over my face and arms. I practically got rid of all my belongings but to no avail by this time I had become, and still am sensitive to all chemicals and to the sun.  I too feel every speck of smog on my skin. Any kind of smell seems to trigger something that causes my skin to burn  like someone has poured acid on my skin.  I became unable to be around any people or in and around any buildings. because of all this my anxiety problems got a 100 times worse and when I finally saw a psychiatrist and started taking anti -anxiety and anti-depressants my pain started to become tolerable. but I am by no means normal still have to avoid chemicals-especially second hand smoke, and the only way I have been able to stay near other people and inside buildings ,which always have some smell is by taking nearly 5000 pills a year which has caused me to put on 40 pounds and have rapid and irregular heartbeat.  Someone please tell me what in the world is wrong with me and whether it is curable, or managable, without thousands of pills.

I am a 52 yr old female. I have had back injuries, knee and hand (wrist) injuries as well. I noticed after my first back injury I had a strange feeling on my left outer and part of the upper slight top thigh. That also included a tender and burning sensation on the outer skin. The internal feeling was such a strange and funny feeling hard to describe other than to allow someone to hold a small container of a hair product I had that when you tapped it the feeling that was felt in the hand could be associated with how the inside of my thigh felt. That side of my thigh was so sensitive it was painful if anyone tried to touch it slightly. I was never able to get it addressed properly because doctors did not know or was sure. So I had to deal with that for years and with some physical therapy. I still have the same problem however it is nothing like what it was for years. I stated all that because that was the first situation where I experienced the burning on one part of my body. I had a hysterectomy in 1999 after having that I noticed my body would stay internally hot continuously. I could not tell when it was cold outside by feeling. I have not worn a coat since that surgery. I rarely heat my home because when my   internal heat and the outer heat came together it was just too much to bear. I spoke to my doctor but no one has been able to address that concern. Most people thought it was menopause. However I have been tested and as of yet have not been told that was the case and neither after testing was I put on any hormones. Aside from the fact still to this day I do not sweat or anything like that as far as hot flashes are concern. As time went on the internal heat still exist but not as bad but still bad enough that I do not want too much heat because it just caused my skin to feel as if it were burning. I felt as though I was burning from the inside to the outer surface that started about in the spring of 2003, which was not strongly notice then, but it was there. However I noticed last December I had a red spot on my right lower side of my leg. It was not painful but it was then I notice this burning sensation more. You could touch that red spot with no problem but by the next day the red spot had blistered as if I had been burned with something. Outwardly it still was not painful but you could feel the burning from the inside out. I had not realized until later I had another blister like this but I must have busted it under my clothing and did not realize it. That was the first one. I showed my MD the second blister and he thought that was very unusual and sent me to a dermatologist.  I cannot remember the term he used after a biopsy but whatever the case he must of thought it was some type of virus because he started me on an antibiotic for some kind of herpes. He said it would stop the burning but it did not.  I than went to another doctor who had an MRI done and found I had three herniated disc among other things wrong in my spine and neck and stated I had neuropathy. She said that I had nerve damage that was causing this burning. I told her it gets so bad that it feels as though my blood is boiling but she said that is my nerves. In the mean while this burning has started to intensify.  It got to the point I can feel this burning and this feeling of my blood boiling while I sleep and heavily sedated.  I am tried of being looked at and dealt with like I am crazy. I have been having a hard time having someone to address my concerns. My job has had me to go to their doctors and they continue to say nothing is wrong and they do not take test. Neither do they accept test results because for years they have constantly fought me each time I try to address my medical conditions so I can function as a whole person. Their goal is to make sure you are at work. These doctors are thinking I am making things up and I have been treated for anxiety and stress and depression. As soon as another doctor reads that they impatiently deal with you and put you on more antidepressants. None of these medications have worked if it was psychological. One doctor gave me medicine and said it was for the burning and he told me to take one pill a day and because I asked and what if it doesn't work, with just reasons because I have taken most of those medicines, he thought I was being negative and than he decided I should take one pills twice a day. I ask the pharmacist what was this medicine prescribed for and he stated it was mainly for schizophrenia. The doctor said my burning was due to formication, which was associated with heroine and cocaine that neither of those drugs I take. In looking up that term it associated those drugs and breaking it down more it was saying I wanted to be relieved of responsibilities. In other words I wanted to get out of work. This made sense when the doctors said he could not keep me out of work forever. I found that statement to be strange because I never asked him to keep me out of work. I just wanted to know why I was burning. I was so upset because these doctors think I am crazy. In the meanwhile this burning is getting worse. I am also getting sharp needling pain in my inner thigh stretching across my private area from time to time and even down my legs. My whole body burns including my face neck, back and arms, the areas that have been injured. I need air to blow on me most of the time. Now if I were to get chilled the goose bumps you get when you are cold becomes painful with the burning. I seem to need the motion and a little cool to be able to endure. It seems my problem is graduating from one level of severity to another. I do not know how serious this is and my doctors have to be writing something negative about me in my files because when I allow access to my records to travel with me from one doctor to another and my job they already have me prejudged and I do not get the proper care. I do not know where to turn and because I basically look healthy no one believes me. My weight is out of control and it is not due to being an over eater. I can't seem to lose the weight. I'm fatigue and weak all the time. I have now developed dark circles around my eyes and as long as my test results come back normal these doctors will only see you as crazy and try to put you on medicine for a mental state of being. And that is not it. I live a lone and I must provide for myself and I seem to be getting sicker and sicker by the minute because I can no longer address my concerns in the way I need because I think my medical record are tainted and why because if doctors don't know and don't want to admit they don't know they will say it's in our minds and try to put you on all sorts of drugs you may not need. At least I know that for myself. I have been given some of the strongest narcotics and THEY DON'T WORK! After a while you can't help from feeling discourage among other things. My life seems to be wasting with these issues and sleep aptima. I am tired and rest is a true issue. I can't get it because this burning keeps me up and the sleep aptima keeps me to active when I sleep. I'm a mess. Also there are not many you can talk to without people not understanding you are not a chronic complainer, you're just seeking and hoping to find the solution. So please if someone know what this could be or can direct me to the kind of doctor who takes their practices serious enough than there might be hope for all of us. But how do you find that doctor who will help. Thank you so much for reading this and what ever help.

Hello,
I was self diagnoised with type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago after undegoing extensive testing for gastro problems.  My symptoms were chronic nausea especially early morning and would go away sometimes after my daily vomiting routine was over. Never the less I was suffering everyday like pregnant women with bad morning sickness.  When I informed my doctor of my findings, the same doctor who treated my grandfather for diabetes he put me on glucontrol and my symptoms got considerably better in a short time.  My blood sugar was at 675 when found.  Over the past 7 months I have been suffering with a tremendeous amount of burning all over my body. It comes and goes at certain times of the day.  When it comes on the first symptom is the skin feels cold to touch very cold.  And then this stinging burning(like sunburned)pain spreads all over.  Its almost always in my legs and feet with numbness additionally.  Covers the chest, back of neck, shoulders, hips and lower belly area as well as the happy organs.  I have been to a neurologist who said it is neuropathy.  He prescribed Neurontin 900 mgs daily which does absolutely nothing to relieve the pain.  However I developed thoughts of suicide while taking it and stopped it completely. Mentally all is okay now however I am in a bunch of pain still. The doctor has prescribed oxycodone which takes the pain away but has made me dependent.  I would love to find out why this happening to me so I can stop medicines and live again.  Maybe its some alergy (allergy).  Thanks for listening.

I have had the burning skin sensations since Sept 2004.  It started in the clavical area on the left side of my neck and spread to the back of my neck. I was treated for shingles and was treated with Valtrex.  It didn't help.  Now burning has spread all over my face, arms and neck and left hand.  It also is on legs and left foot.  I have had so many blood tests to rule out lupus, RA, MS, etc. all of which cause burning. Rheumatologist wonders if it is drug-induced lupus, but all the blood tests for lupus were negative.  Do have a positive ANA, but that is the only blood test that came out positive.  I am on neurontin - 3 pills x 2 times a day.  Also, rheumatolgist prescrived peroxican 20 mgs daily (NSAID).  None of these seem to help the burning.  Skin turns red when I get the burning really bad.  Went to ER once and they told me to say away from anything with niacin in it (was taking silver centrum and stopped that).  In fact, my internist took my off all drugs and all vitamins except for synthroid which I have to take daily.  Also still taking neurontin and peroxicam, but like I said they don't help.  My rheumatologist is concerned that the continued burning could damage my nerve endings if not controlled. I am very concerned about this too.  So far, I have seen my internist, neurologist and rheumatologist, but I wonder if this could be endocrinology related.  My internist also wonders if my body is producing too much histamine and had me taking a urine sample (over 24 hour period) and turn it into the lab.  Did that yesterday, and it will take some time to find out.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this awful burning.  I have it all the time and it is bad sometimes.

Thanks.

I have been having a burning sensation for the last year also. It started in September of 2003 Labor Day weekend where my face when numb and then this burning like sensation would come over me. I had a EEG done last November came out negative, had a MRI done on my head in February of this year and have had a MRI of the sinus done in October all came out normal. Now the burning sensation has done down to my legs and feet. Right now as I type this my feet are burning and so are the calfs. The back of my head and ears are burning also. The doctor has put me on Neurontin 600mg two to three times a day and if worked for about a month but now the burning is getting worse. I have had blood test also and everything came out normal. I feel fine except for this. I am also on previcid for acid reflex. I hope that someone can give me an answer of what this is and if this is treatable or curable.I would just like a diagnosis and to know that this is not life threating. I have an 8 year old girl and a 3 year old boy and want to see them grow up and have children of there own. I lost both my parents very young my dad age 51 to cancer and my mom age 57 to a blood clot in the lung. Can anyone just tell me if this is deadly. PLEASE.
Thank you for listening and I hope we all get better soon.

I too have burning sensation for past 2 years with all tests normal. My burning sensation has a few unique qualities - curious if anyone has any thoughts.
1. Feel perfect in mornings. The burning sensation becomes noticeable later in am's and is worse as the day goes on.
2. I have a horrible burning tongue that really drives me crazy.
3. The burning feeling is an all-over my body feeling.
4. I get chills and turn to ice feeling a few times a day.

Any thoughts? The dr's seem stumped. I'm a 45 year old male and otherwise healthy.

Have you been told by any doctors that your burning sensation could be anxiety, stress, or depression related?
That's what I was told.  And although I'm not sure if anxiety is the CAUSE of the sensations, I have found it to be true that anxiety does make it worse.  The anti-anxiety medicines have helped me to the point of making life tolerable, but of course they are not without sid-effects and I am concerned about long-term use.  But I say this becasue I am a very anxious person and also have two young children that I worry about all the time.  I wonder what will happen to them if something happens to me. I have been told that I need counseling to control my anxiety and to take care of things in my life that are in my control to and let go of my worries about things that are not in my control.  I don't think the stuff is all in my head or psychological but I don't doubt any more that the mind and the body do affect each other.  I had chronic gastritis for 6 years and always tested negative for whatever could casue the problem.  My gastroenterologist kept telling me it was stress related and I didn't believe her, but when I started taking anxiety medicine to control the skin pain my gastritis and stomach problems went away- although I  still take protonix twice a day, which is similar to previcid.

Thank you for the information how the burning sensation might be Axiety. I did talk to my nero doctor and he now has put me on Trileptol to see if that help. I am just glad that some other people are also having the same thing that I am describing and that I am not nuts. I recently lost my job last month and was told by my hubby that I could just relax and enjoy the time with my children and don't worry about getting a job which I have not been trying to look for one right now with the holiday next week. I am trying to enjoy my time off and forgetting about everything that has to do with stress but there are days that the burning is worse then other days. When it does I go and sit down for a while and it seems to calm down a bit. I just would like to know if this is something serious that is going to change my life or is this something that will be controlled by drugs that I will have to be on for the rest of my life. I just would like to be normal again and not have this pain in the top of my head like Freddy Krueger fingers are going in to the top of my skull. If anyone else has this problem with a burning on the top of their head I would love to hear from them. Again Ariana thank you for your help and support.
Happy Holidays and have a Wonderful 2005
Carrie

I had this and it turned out to be Lyme Disease. But it took YEARS to get a diagnosis because my Lyme test kept coming back negative.... Eventually heard the truth about Lyme and how HORRIFICALLY unreliable and pathetic the testing is.... FABulous documentary on how  fibromyalgia-chronic fatigue and all those other "syndrome" diagnosis's actually are LYME DISEASE!!!!!!!! It's on Netflix called Under Our Skin. It saved my life... <3
