CT Scan Results

Results of a CT scan for persistent headaches lasting more than 2 weeks on a 10 year old read: "Minimal muscosal thickening posteriorly in right maxillary antrum". Is this generally a sinus problem or could it be related to a dental problem (no adult teeth coming through 8 months after baby eye teeth were removed from upper jaw) or am I way off track. What does the CT results mean?

The CT scan (which is the best test looking for acute or chronic sinusitis) on the child indicates mild sinus inflammation.  You can't tell whether it is mild active or a much more severe bout that is mostly resolved.  The maxillary sinus in the one right onder the cheekbone under the eyes.  Firm pressure on the face right under the cheek bone will often produce quite an achey (achy) pain.  No the finding does not indicate a dental problem.

Very often in children and in adults, pressure in the maxillary sinuses may be felt as upper tooth pain.  This is because the bottom of the sinus sits on top of the teeth and they have some of the same nerves.
