: : I have been taking calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis for about 10 years. Is it possible that this is causing the sensorineuropathy in my feet for the past 5-6 years? I am not a diabetic, alcoholic, smoker, HIV-positive, and know of no familial predisposition to neurological problems.
On second thought...could it be that improper metabolism of these minerals is the cause of neuropathic pain in my feet?

The use of calcium or magnesium supplements are not contributing to your peripheral neuropathy (PN).  You can continue these supplements without causing any further damage.  PNs may be associated with nutritional deficiency states such as deficiency of thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, folic acid , vitamin E or  Vitamin B12.  Excessive B6 (pyridoxine) may also cause a neuropathy.  Despite extensive workup which includes neurologic examination, laboratory tests and EMG/NCS, approximately 25% of PNs are not found to have an etiology.  I would invite you to browse some of the previously answered questions on peripheral neuropathies.  This may provide some additional information.  If you would like further evaluation I would recommend a neurologist who specializes in neuromuscular diseases.  The Cleveland Clinic has a wonderful department and if we may be of assistance to you call 1-800-223-2273 or 216-444-2200 ext 45559 to arrange an appointment.
