: The information that comes with some medications cautions against taking calcium supplements within 2 hours of the medication. As a 60 year old woman, I recognize the need to take calcium supplements, but with a pain management regimen that includes an anti-depressant, anti-convulsant, and anti-arrhythmia, I'm wondering if the precaution against taking the meds together is valid...if so, I'll be watching the clock for calcium (I often forget to take it unless I take it with other meds.

The information which comes with some medication regarding the concurrent use of calcium supplements is based on the fact that calcium binds to and inactivates some medications, in addition the binding of calcium to the drug also means that it is not absorbed, the effect therefore would be as if you were taking a greatly reduced amount of both drugs, I would strongly advise you therefore to take the drugs spaced a few hours apart as recommended.
