Hi, I'm afraid I can't explain everything, but the injury and spread of pain, with resultant changes in the left leg, including edema, are highly suggestive of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. This used to be called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. It is a severe pain syndrome caused by a change in the nervous system which alters many of the functions of the body. The blood flow into the affected limb(s) changes and may cause the limb to be abnormally cold. Early after the injury (first couple months) the areas involved may be redder than normal, but after a longer time the limb(s) may become pale. The brain's entire reaction to and perception of pain changes. The pain in all areas affected may be extremely severe.
The affect limbs may actually atrophy with loss of muscle mass.
I have heard of cases in which it spread to include most of the body. I don't know about the head pain you've been experiencing.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome often requires a team of pain specialists to treat. It can become chronic as it sounds like yours (if that is what you have) is. If you are not already seeing a top-notch Pain Management Team (like at a major University) I would recommend you get in to see one as soon as possible.

You can do a search for it and read quite a bit.
Did my description ring any bells?
